Vice President of Engineering , you will be a key member of the executive leadership team, reporting to the CEO. This role leads the transition from deep R&D to product development and commercialization, guiding a growing engineering team and defining LiquidPiston’s future product lines. You’ll lead a multidisciplinary team through scaling from ~20 to 40+ engineers in the near term, delivering breakthrough engine and generator systems and ensuring rapid iteration, quality, and cross-functional alignment. This role requires a balance of technical depth, leadership, and strategic vision across mechanical, electrical, systems, and software engineering. Key Responsibilities
Lead and grow a multidisciplinary engineering team across mechanical, electrical, software, systems, and testing disciplines Oversee design, development, prototyping, testing, and validation of advanced rotary engines and generator systems Provide hands-on technical guidance in engine architecture, calibration, system integration, and controls Ensure timely delivery of project milestones from concept to production-ready prototypes Define engineering standards, development processes, documentation, and quality systems Collaborate with the CEO, CTO, and business development to align engineering with market opportunities and customer needs Support and co-author technical proposals and whitepapers for government and commercial funding opportunities Represent the company in meetings with strategic partners, customers, and government agencies (e.g., DARPA, DOE) Manage external resources including contractors, vendors, and joint development partners Build a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement Qualifications
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering; M.S. or Ph.D. preferred 15+ years in engineering leadership roles, ideally in startups or early-stage hardware companies Deep knowledge of combustion engine systems—rotary or piston—including calibration, design, testing, and control Familiarity with generator systems, hybrid powertrains, and energy storage components Experience managing engineering teams through full lifecycle development Prior exposure to government-funded R&D (DARPA, DOE, DoD) desirable Experience in high-mix R&D or low-volume production environments Proficient in SolidWorks, LabVIEW, Mastercam, MATLAB, Converge, GT Suite, ANSYS Ability to balance technical leadership with strategic decision-making under tight timelines Personal Qualities and Cultural Fit
