Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience
The Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI) is seeking a Neural Data Scientist to spearhead a funded Neuro-AI Initiative, designed to expand MPFI’s capacity for scientific computing and data analytics. The selected candidate will make a major contribution to the MPFI’s groundbreaking discoveries and rapid advancement of neuroscience, applying their scientific expertise in AI and machine learning to the development of novel analytical tools that increase the pace of science, foster innovation and collaboration, and embed data science training throughout the scientific community.
MPFI is uniquely positioned as a global hub for brain research, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and advancing next generation tools and technologies to address some of the biggest scientific challenges of our time. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead the development of a cutting-edge AI-driven discovery platform for predictive modelling, with an emphasis on large-scale multiplexed neural data sets and biosensor optimization.
The selected candidate will work closely with MPFI’s Scientific Directors to develop AI-driven analysis and modelling that deliver new insights into neural dynamics, brain states, and ultimately the cause of - and solution to - disorders of the brain. In this role, the selected candidate will:
Work closely with MPFI’s experimental research groups to generate testable hypotheses and new insights into neural function. Develop deep learning frameworks to analyze large-scale, multi-modal neural data sets, including in vivo multiphoton functional imaging of neural populations, electrophysiology using high-density silicon probes, and behavior. Collaboratively develop a technology and data sharing platform to promote open science and foster collaboration. Work with the MPFI scientific community to adopt best practices in their data analysis workflows, and enhance the pace of scientific discovery.
Required:
PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Computational Neuroscience, or related fields; or demonstrable equivalent experience Expertise in AI/ML (especially deep learning) applied to biological or neural data sets. Proficiency in Python and common machine learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow, Jax) A solid record of scientific publications and collaborative research
Preferred:
3+ years of postdoctoral research experience A strong background in systems neuroscience, neural recording techniques, or biosensor technologies
The selected candidate must be confident in handling a research-oriented working culture and navigating a fast-paced scientific work environment. In addition to the core technical skills, MPFI is seeking an energetic, motivated and proactive leader who will bring enthusiasm to the position and a passion to solve complex problems and facilitate the progress of scientific research. The selected candidate must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, attention to detail as well as strategic thinking abilities, high levels of discretion, professional judgement, ethics, and confidentiality.
