Overview

Position Title: Senior Accountant

Reports to: COO

Position Summary: The Senior Accountant leads the organization’s accounting and financial operations, ensuring compliance with GAAP, robust internal controls, and accurate financial reporting. This role is responsible for managing the month-end and year-end close processes, overseeing budgeting and forecasting, preparing financial statements and reports, and supporting audits and regulatory compliance. The Senior Accountant also collaborates with executive leadership to provide financial insights and support strategic decision-making.

Compensation

Base pay range: $85,000.00/yr - $105,000.00/yr

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of monthly and annual close processes, including journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow).
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal policies, and external reporting requirements.
  • Oversee accounts payable and receivable functions.
  • Perform variance analysis and investigate financial discrepancies.
  • Maintain accurate grant and endowment accounting records.
  • Reconcile construction project finances with owners' representatives.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Audit

  • Lead annual budgeting and multi-year financial planning processes with department heads.
  • Monitor and manage cash flow projections and capital project budgets.
  • Support external audits and liaise with auditors and tax consultants.
  • Prepare financial information for Board Finance and Investment Committees.

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Develop and maintain internal accounting policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Ensure compliance with state, federal, and grant-related financial regulations.
  • Maintain organizational filings (e.g., state registrations, tax compliance).
  • Review financial implications of major contracts and vendor relationships.

Collaboration & Strategic Support

  • Partner with COO and CEO to deliver financial analysis that supports organizational strategy.
  • Assist in resource planning and drive cost-efficiency initiatives.
  • Support development efforts by aligning finance with fundraising and capital campaign planning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in the nonprofit sector.
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial practices.
  • Experience managing audits and capital project finances.
  • Strong proficiency in QuickBooks and financial reporting tools.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • High integrity, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.
