(AID) is looking to hire a full-time, entry level engineer to provide geotechnical and materials engineering field and design services throughout New Jersey, the Philadelphia and surrounding area, with occasional assignments in other states and locations. The responsibilities for this role include characterizing subsurface conditions including soil profiles and soil parameters for the purpose of designing structures such as bridge and building foundations, retaining walls, temporary structures, stormwater infiltration basins, and pavements. This work involves inspection of borings, test pits, pavement coring, and pavement subgrade sampling, and includes assigning and performing laboratory testing This role includes performing material testing in both the field and the lab for concrete, asphalt, and soil materials. These types of inspection and testing experience are essential to growing professionally in geotechnical engineering and materials engineering. The role may also include support for other departments at AID. Project-specific responsibilities may include any or all of the following tasks: Geotechnical Engineering Geotechnical boring and test pit inspections, including collecting and logging soil and rock samples for laboratory testing and preparing boring and test pit logs under the direction and guidance of the project geotechnical engineering lead. Pavement coring and subgrade sampling and field testing, and collecting pavement and subgrade samples for laboratory testing, under the direction of the project pavement engineering lead. Characterize foundation subsurface conditions. Characterize pavement and subgrade conditions. Preparing boring, test pit, and pavement core location plans to AID standards using CAD base files and mapping tools such as Google Earth. Daily field reports and maintaining project documentation. Manual and software-based geotechnical analyses under the direction and guidance of the project geotechnical engineering lead. Analyses may include lateral earth pressure, stability, bearing, and settlement of geotechnical structures including piles and drilled shafts, among other items. Assist the project pavement engineering lead in preparing pavement design inputs and calculations following FAA and AASHTO guidelines. Prepare technical memoranda documenting geotechnical manual and software analyses, analysis methods, and results, including sources of methodology such as FHWA, AASHTO, and NJDOT standards, documents, and related literature Adhere to and promote safety requirements including OSHA excavation safety standards and proper use of PPE. Materials Engineering Review and compile field and laboratory test data for asphalt, concrete, soil, and aggregate. Prepare technical memoranda documenting field and laboratory testing methods and test results. Assist in analysis of IRI pavement data collected in the field for the purpose of assessing smoothness condition of pavement. Field-locate and obtain concrete core samples of existing bridge substructures for laboratory testing to evaluate structural condition. Perform hand-held GPR to identify reinforcing steel locations. Coordinate quality assurance and control with material engineering project lead prior to providing results to clients. Perform field sampling of soil and aggregate materials from quarries and construction sites. Prepare selected field samples for laboratory testing at AIDs and others laboratories. Perform field and laboratory testing on construction material, including Atterberg Limits, sieve analyses, proctor compaction, concrete compressive and flexural strength, and HMA volumetric design testing. Qualifications Bachelors degree in civil engineering with an academic focus in Geotechnical Engineering and Materials Engineering. Masters degree in civil engineering is preferred, with a strong emphasis in Geotechnical Engineering and Materials Engineering. Additional background in structural analysis, design, and numerical analysis is a plus. 02 years of relevant experience. About AID AID is a leading engineering firm with nearly 25 years of experience in New Jersey and the surrounding region. Our work is nationally recognized for quality and expertise in investigation and design in the areas of geotechnical engineering, pavement engineering, non-destructive testing (NDT), and materials inspection and testing. We serve clients in highway, bridge, airport, tunnel, and rail infrastructure sectors. AIDs technical groups collaborate on projects including the use of NDT equipment for geotechnical subsurface investigations and geotechnical engineering support of pavement evaluations and forensic investigations of pavement and geotechnical structure failures. Our geotechnical work has included rapid response to emergency conditions such as a retaining structure collapse impinging on an existing mixed use building, distress of a roadway pavement due to deterioration of the underlying culvert structural slab, and pavement failure due to loss of ground during construction removal of obstructions to advancing sheeting. AID has an AASHTO-accredited soils, asphalt, and concrete materials testing laboratory. With its four distinct yet inter-operable practice areas, AID is a leader for projects involving infrastructure assessment, rehabilitation, and design. We are proud to be addressing the needs of our clients in the important field of infrastructure evaluation and design.
