Construction Assistant

This is a full-time role, reporting to our Construction Manager. For this role, you must live in or near Summerville, SC, and be willing to work on our construction sites in Dorchester County (mainly the Summerville and St. George areas) 25 hours a week, including Saturdays. Typical hours for this role are 7 am – 3 pm,  with Tuesday – Saturday availability. On occasion, there is a need to work additional hours throughout the year. The Construction Assistant may be asked to perform additional duties deemed necessary by the Construction Manager and/or President and CEO.

The Mission: The mission of the Construction Assistant is to provide excellent support to the Construction Manager in the processes of all Dorchester Habitat for Humanity projects. While repetitive tasks are part of this position, the tasks assigned can vary weekly based on the Construction Manager’s needs and the organization’s needs.

Responsibilities

The Construction Assistant will have the following primary responsibilities:

  • Assure that the construction team and volunteers have the necessary materials, equipment, and tools for construction and that they are well maintained.
  • Provide end-of-the-day reports to the Construction Manager.
  • Inventory and check the quantity and quality of materials delivered to site.
  • At the end of each day, clean, organize, and properly store and secure equipment, materials, and tools used in construction.
  • Monitor day-to-day site safety and ensure that the Occupational Safety and Health Act requirements are enforced.
  • Maintain equipment, materials, and tools on site to ensure accessibility and provision for the construction team and volunteers.
  • Monitor and maintain site safety, garbage collection and disposal, recycling, materials, tools, equipment, and proper storage.
  • Ensure that safety guidelines, policies, practices, and OSHA safety standards are followed on-site.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe site at all times.
  • Attend team meetings and training sessions.
  • Turn in paperwork and timesheets promptly.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Construction Manager and/or President and CEO.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Clear SLED, FBI, and Offender Registry checks.
  • Valid and current SC Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of and skills in using construction machinery, materials, equipment, and tools.
  • Attention to detail and overall quality control.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, dealing with various abilities, backgrounds, cultures, people, personalities, and skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
    Basic math aptitude to calculate building measurements, quantities, etc.
  • Punctual and reliable.
  • Timely completes jobs and responsibilities.
  • Works well under pressure and in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and asks for help when needed.
  • Ethical with high standards of integrity and accountability.
  • Initiative is represented by a “sense of urgency”, energy, enthusiasm, attention to detail, and follow-up.
  • Projects a professional image in speech and demeanor in interactions with others in multiple scenarios.
  • Works effectively with little to no supervision.

Requirements

  • Experience: 1-3 years construction experience.
  • Physical: Ability to spend most of the day standing and/or moving. Ability to bend; stand; walk; climb; kneel; sit; use hands to finger, handle, and/or feel; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; crouch; work at heights; lift; and crawl, often in awkward and/or tiring positions.
  • Work is mostly outdoors, with frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Ability to safely move, reach, lift, and position at least 30 pounds on a frequent basis. Ability to stand for at least 4 hours or more.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Part-time, hourly. Compensation starts at $19 an hour (commensurate with experience and expertise). Benefits include PTO, long-term and short-term insurance, life insurance, a Simple IRA, and professional development opportunities.
