Job Title: Outside Machinist
Job Description
The Outside Machinist role involves performing various tasks related to the removal, repair, overhaul, and installation of ship's mechanical and hydraulic equipment. The machinist will work on submarine sail components, propulsion mechanics, and steering and diving systems.
Responsibilities
Open, inspect, repair, and test components of submarine sea water, hydraulic, and diesel systems.
Inspect and repair hatches and watertight openings.
Overhaul hull and backup valve repairs.
Repair AHP valves.
Perform repair and restoration work on thin and fat line systems.
Remove, repair, install, align, and test sail systems including periscopes, masts, and antennas.
Perform repair and restoration work on shafts, shaft couplings, and vibration reducers.
Overhaul main SSTG turbines.
Inspect and overhaul main reduction gears.
Inspect and overhaul condensers, hot wells, and associated components.
Remove, refurbish, and reinstall fairwater and stern plane components.
Refurbish and align submarine steering and diving system linkages.
Repair or replace anchor windlass and associated anchor system components.
Essential Skills
Experience repairing and overhauling ships' mechanical and hydraulic components such as diesel engines, hatches, valves, and pumps.
Experience performing SUBSAFE work in accordance with NAVSEA Submarine Safety Requirements Manual.
Steam Plant Cleanliness trained and qualified as per NAVSEAINST 9210.36F.
Specialized experience with removal, repair, installation, alignment, and overhaul of submarine sail components.
Experience with mechanical work on thin and fat line systems.
Specialized experience with removal, repair, installation, alignment, and overhaul of submarine turbines, reduction gears, shafting, and thrust bearings.
Specialized experience with removal, repair, installation, alignment, troubleshooting, and overhaul of submarine steering and diving systems and components such as rudder, stern plane, and fairwater plane.
Must have a secret security clearance.

Machinist Mate
Experience in shipyard, marine, and ship repair environments.
Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing valves, marine engines, and motors.
