Overview

Performs intermediate skilled and semiskilled work in a variety of public works construction, maintenance and repair projects; occasionally operates specialized equipment in connection with tasks; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Crew Leader.

Hiring Ranges for Maintenance/Construction Worker I-III:

  • Level I: $36,732 - $44,813
  • Level II: $40,498 - $49,406
  • Level III: $44,648 - $54,469

Physical Conditions

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a respirator.

  • Performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of public facilities such as streets, drainways, sidewalks and related facilities.
  • Gathers necessary tools, materials and supplies for assignment;
  • Patches, repairs and maintains streets; repairs curbs and gutters; assists with landscaping projects;
  • Rebuilds road shoulders; digs ditches; rebuilds driving aprons;
  • Installs, repairs and maintains storm drain facilities; builds and sets forms for sidewalks, curbs and gutters;
  • Shovels asphalt and directs traffic during street maintenance projects; erects traffic control signs;
  • Reads blueprints and helps layout and plan projects;
  • Assists equipment operator with grading using transit or flat level;
  • Purchases necessary materials and tools for tasks as approved by supervisor;
  • Transports equipment to job site; reviews written instructions with supervisor;
  • Operates dump truck, roller, box blade, tractors, sweeper, backhoe and a variety of hand tools in performance of maintenance and construction tasks; performs preventive maintenance on equipment;
  • Pours and finishes concrete; assists with snow and ice removal; cleans catch basins; picks up litter;
  • Clears and trims trees; mows grass;
  • Fits and secures pipe connections; helps keep pipe on grade;
  • Participates in clean-up activities at the conclusion of a project;
  • Performs related tasks as required.
  • High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in construction and maintenance work or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Level II and Level lII require three (3) years’ experience in the maintenance and construction and heavy equipment operation, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Placement into Level I, II, or III for this position is dependent on applicant's qualifications and experience.
  • Possession of a NC CDL Class B License or ability to obtain one within six (6) months.
  • Must be on call when required.

General knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to lift heavy articles; good physical condition; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
