Fire Division Chief . We will accept applications from current qualified and regular employees only - temporary employees are not eligible to apply.

Definition To plan, direct and coordinate the activities of a Fire department geographical or functional area including Logistics, Operations, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Fire and Life Safety by serving as Fire Marshal, Planning and Training; to coordinate activities with other divisions and departments; and to provide highly complex staff assistance to the Fire Chief.

Supervision Received and Exercised Receives general direction from the Fire Chief or Assistant Fire Chief. Exercises direct supervision over assigned management, professional, technical and administrative support staff.

Experience and Training Experience:

Nine years of increasingly responsible experience in municipal fire service or similar organization, including experience with full-time management responsibility at the equivalent level of Battalion Chief or higher.

AND

Training:

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Major course work in fire science, public administration, business administration or a related field is desirable. A Master’s degree in Fire Administration or a related field is desirable.

AND

License and Certificate:

Possession of a valid California driver’s license upon date of appointment.

Possession of a California State Fire Marshal’s Company Officer Certification. Certification from other agencies may be considered.

Possession of a Hazardous Materials Incident Commander Certification that complies with the training requirements under Fed-OSHA, Cal-OSHA, and NFPA 472.

Possession of a California State Fire Marshal Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations - Decontamination Certification. Certification from other agencies may be considered.

Possession of National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 200, 300, 400, 700 & 800 certificates.

Possession of First Aid and CPR certificates.

Possession of Emergency Medical Technician I Certification or Paramedic License is desirable.

Possession of California Chief Officer certification is desirable.

Completion of course requirements for Safety Officer S-404 is desirable.

When assigned to Fire and Life Safety

Completion of P.O.S.T. certified California Penal Code Section 832 course within one (1) year of hire.

Completion of all Fire Investigator courses as outlined on the Professional Certification Tracks from the California Office of the State Fire Marshal within 18 months of hire.

Possession of an International Code Council Underground Storage Tank Inspector certification is desirable.

Possession of an International Code Council Fire Inspector I & II certification is desirable.

Possession of an International Code Council Fire Examiner certification is desirable.

California Office of the State Fire Marshal Fire Marshal certification is desirable.

Selection Process All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be placed on the employment list utilizing experience and promotional points, if applicable. Candidates qualifying to minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the Fire Department's assessment, which includes a panel interview and a Chief's interview.

Final appointment is contingent upon a check of past employment references, passing a City-paid fingerprint check, and depending on the position applied for, a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol screening test, credit check, license and/or education verification, psychological examination, and/or an extensive Police Department background check process. Some positions require the clearance of a comprehensive Police Department (PD) background check within 12 months of appointment. The City may appoint candidates to positions prior to clearing the PD background check, and in those circumstances the candidate will be advised that security access in IT systems will be limited until PD clearance is received. If the candidate ultimately does not clear the PD background it will result in release from City service without appeal rights, in accordance with Personnel Rules 3.04.050.
