Overview The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive environmental health and safety programs to ensure a safe and compliant campus environment. This role involves developing and managing safety protocols, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and Implement EHS Programs: Create and enforce policies and procedures to promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility. Design, conduct, and/or participate in safety programs to educate employees campus wide in occupational safety and ensures the proper identification and handling of chemicals, equipment, machinery, etc.

Compliance Management: Ensure the university complies with all relevant environmental, health and safety regulations.

Risk Assessment: Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions.

Hazardous Waste Management: Oversee the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste materials to minimize environmental impact and ensure compliance with regulations.

Environmental Audits: Conduct regular environmental audits and inspections to identify potential environmental hazards and ensure compliance with environmental standards.

Training and Education: Develop and deliver training programs for faculty, staff and students on EHS topics, including but not limited to emergency response, hazardous materials handling, and workplace safety.

Reporting and Documentation: Maintain accurate records of environmental compliance activities, incidents, and corrective actions, and prepare reports for regulatory agencies as required.

Incident Investigation: Lead investigations into accidents and incidents, identifying root causes, and recommend preventative measures.

Emergency Response: Coordinate emergency response activities and develop emergency preparedness plans.

Regulation Liaison: Serve as the primary contact with regulatory agencies and ensure timely reporting and documentation.

Sustainability Initiatives: Support the university’s sustainability goals by managing waste reduction, pollution prevention and resource conservation programs.

Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of safety inspection, training sessions, waste and compliance activities.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree. Three (3) years of work experience in occupational, environmental (hazardous materials and waste management), health, and safety.

Preferred Qualifications Five (5) years of experience in Environmental Health & Safety preferably in an academic or research setting. Strong knowledge of EHS, NFPA, OSHA, & AHERA regulations, excellent communication and training skills. Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting. Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
