Overview

Culpeper County, population of 56,000, a growing, yet agriculturally sensitive jurisdiction, is seeking a seasoned, practical, well-rounded and responsive professional to serve as its full-time County Attorney. The County Attorney is the chief legal officer and counsel to the County’s Board of Supervisors, County Administrator, Department Heads, various committees, commissions and boards. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with the public, elected officials, and County staff, and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills. The position requires the ability to manage a broad range of legal matters related to local government operations. A working knowledge of, and experience in, land use law, including its statutory and case law framework, as necessary, as this will be a significant area of responsibility. The successful candidate will lead the County Attorney’s office which currently includes two Assistant County Attorneys and one Paralegal. The County Attorney is authorized to consult with and retain outside legal counsel as necessary, within the constraints of the approved legal services budget, to ensure the County’s interests are effectively represented and protected. Key responsibilities

Serve as County Attorney, chief legal officer and counsel to the Board of Supervisors, County Administrator, Department Heads, various committees, commissions and boards. Lead the County Attorney’s office (currently two Assistant County Attorneys and one Paralegal). Manage a broad range of legal matters related to local government operations. Collaborate with the public, elected officials, and County staff; demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills. Apply working knowledge of land use law and its statutory and case law framework as a significant area of responsibility. Oversee or consult with outside legal counsel as necessary within the approved legal services budget to protect and represent the County’s interests. Qualifications

Working knowledge of land use law within its statutory and case law framework. Compensation and application

Compensation for this position will be commensurate with experience, within a projected range from $180,000.00 to $230,000.00 per year. The County also provides a comprehensive benefit package.
