Overview
The Counselor will provide a full range of counseling, consultation, and outreach services under the general direction of the Counseling Services Director at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM). The Counselor position is responsible for, but not limited to, individual and group mental health assessment; counseling, teletherapy; prevention education; classroom, group, organization, and department presentations and workshops; referrals; individual, organizational, and group consultation; treatment/intervention planning and follow-through; timely documentation of progress notes; referrals to and consulting with other professionals on- and off-campus; participation in other activities of the Counseling Services Continuous Quality Improvement program; attending Counseling Services and other departmental meetings as assigned; participation at professional trainings, workshops and/or conferences as assigned; participation in other assigned Counseling Services and campus committees and activities. Other duties as assigned.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities Essential Functions: The successful candidate will be committed to the academic success of all learners and to an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates the rich cultural, ethnic, and racial fabric of the communities served by the Institution. The candidate will work effectively, respectfully, and collaboratively in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings; join faculty, staff, students, and administrators in the Institution’s shared commitment to engagement, service, and the public good. Responsibilities include ensuring regular attendance, maintaining confidentiality, and adhering to ethical codes. Provide comprehensive counseling services to students and residents as required, including preventative or remedial assessment. Provide training in study skills, time management, and anxiety reduction counseling to medical, Ph.D., PA, and public health students in individual and/or group settings. Create survey and evaluation tools, manage data collection, storage, and analysis, and generate reports. Conduct wellness feedback sessions related to electronically administered screening assessments for each academic class. Conduct follow-up wellness sessions with assigned students. Engage in wellness education and mindfulness exercises as assigned. Participate in weekly support groups, outreach, and/or personalized wellness interventions for assigned academic programs. Attend approved training sessions, staff development activities, and required meetings. Provide crisis coverage, including after-hours on-call coverage. Prepare student wellness plans, monthly reports, discharge plans, and analyze treatment progress using functional assessment tools; adjust therapeutic approaches as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications Education: Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in social work, guidance/counseling, psychology or related field is required. Eligibility for related license required. Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years counseling experience in clinical or educational settings, with emphasis in clinical counseling preferred. Essential Competencies/Performance Expectations: High integrity and empathy; strong networking, planning, organization, and collaboration skills; ability to manage conflict, motivate, and uphold social justice values; professionalism; excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience in higher education, undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, or hospital administration. Ability to collaborate across multiple levels of an organization, maintain harmonious working relationships, and address complex and sensitive administrative issues. Experience presenting to large audiences. Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment. Ability to adapt to changing environments and navigate organizational dynamics. Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and changing timelines.
Preferred Qualifications Licensed or licensed eligible in the state of Georgia preferred.
