Description Isle of Wight County is seeking an experienced Planner to join our team working for a growing, dynamic community. This position performs long range planning functions and reviews design, site plans, rezoning, exceptions, waivers, variances, special use, conditional use and subdivision plats in order to ensure conformance with ordinance requirements and serves as staff to boards and committees as assigned. Examples of Duties
Assists with long range planning projects including: small area, corridor, and special plan development, and design guideline review and development; Assists with research and writing amendments to the County zoning and subdivision ordinances, the comprehensive plan, and other land use policy documents maintained by the department; Coordinates the review of site plans, subdivision plats, rezoning applications, conditional use permits, and exception requests, among others as needed; Serves as professional staff to boards and committees as assigned, including: project review, meeting organization and notice, and preparing agenda packages; Serves as professional support to the board of supervisors and planning commission, preparing staff reports, and presentations as needed; Researches, prepares, and writes reports; Prepares tables, maps, and presentations, and responds to questions posed by the Planning Director, the Board of Supervisors, the Planning Commission, and the general public; Coordinates planning efforts with contractual partners and consultants employed by the County including assisting with the development of project timelines, budgets, and work scope and coordinating related public notices, meetings, and workshops; Coordinates and facilitates community meetings and work sessions with citizens, community groups, and the planning commission related to special projects; Prepares materials and presentations for such meetings and attends meetings after regular business hours as required; Represents the planning department on regional and local committees as assigned; Answers land use and zoning questions over the phone or by direct customer contact and provides backup staff for the permits counter; Performs field inspections to gather data relevant to the development review process and/or to verify that development projects comply with approved plans; Utilizes GIS/mapping products in order to improve current and long range planning functions; Attends evening meetings, as required; Performs other related duties as assigned. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Requires the use of fingers, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree Two (2) years of related work experience Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
AICP Certification preferred
The successful candidate must be able to work in a fast paced environment and have the ability to function both independently and as a team player. Verbal and written communication skills, as well as analytical skills are essential. Supplemental Information

While some will perform their regular duties, others may be assigned to report at a different time and location and to perform different duties from their regular jobs. Employees will either be deemed essential personnel and provide services that must continue regardless of or pursuant to a state of emergency or will be deemed nonessential personnel that will be required to report to work in an emergency if they receive an assignment to shelter duty or other duty. This position is benefits eligible.
