About the RoleAs a High School History Teacher, you will play a pivotal role in guiding students to become self-directed learners. You will become an expert in your subject matter, inspiring and motivating high school students to engage with history in meaningful ways. Your classes will empower students to find their voices and develop into informed global citizens through a focus on textual analysis, analytical writing, and discourse. By the end of high school, your students will be ready for academic autonomy and college preparatory work.
Key Responsibilities1. Instruction- Teach a dynamic curriculum that emphasizes analysis of World History, US History, American Government, and Economics, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and collegiate-level coursework.
- Facilitate engaging, student-led discussions on historical topics, encouraging debate and critical thinking.
- Guide students in understanding authors' claims and the importance of sourcing, while honing their skills in argumentation, corroboration, inquiry, and historiography through primary and secondary source analysis.
- Create an inclusive and safe classroom environment where students feel empowered to express evidence-based opinions.
- Collaborate with the History department to set academic and engagement goals for students.
- Meet weekly with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work samples and assessments, responding to trends effectively.
- Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom.
- Build positive relationships with students, ensuring they feel seen, loved, and heard.
- Partner with families to provide the necessary resources to support their child's learning needs.
- Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
- Participate in weekly school-wide meetings to foster community, model our core values, and encourage student achievement.
- Collaborate with your grade-level team to develop academic goals and instructional strategies.
- A strong commitment to supporting students’ social, emotional, and academic development.
- A passion for collaborating with internal and external partners for the benefit of students.
- A self-directed learner who actively seeks and implements feedback to improve outcomes.
- Required Experience:
- 1-2 years of experience impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities is preferred.
- Academic expertise in Education, History, Geography, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or the Humanities.
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required prior to employment. Certification is not mandatory at hiring, but you must meet NY state certification eligibility requirements and enroll in a teacher preparation program if you do not have a degree in education.

CompensationThe salary for this role ranges from $50,000 to $64,700, determined by factors such as relevant teaching experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time teaching experience will likely start at $50,000.
