Overview
Software Engineer (1 Year Fixed Term, Remote Opportunity) - School of Medicine, Stanford, California, United States Stanford University and the Department of Behavioral Sciences are seeking a Software Engineer to help develop and maintain scalable, production-grade frontend and backend systems to support autism research in AI. The Software Engineer will work with the PI and other staff members to execute programming tasks including programming, analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, modifying, and maintaining computer programs. The School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and the School of Engineering Computer Sciences group at Stanford have collaborated to develop modules for verbal individuals on the autism spectrum. They are refining, researching, and developing additional modules to demonstrate that the AI modules are effective and generalize to human conversation. A randomized clinical trial has been published; smaller studies are being implemented to provide accessible and effective treatment to autistic adolescents and adults.
Responsibilities Duties include:
Conceptualize design, implement, and develop solutions for complex system/programs independently.
Work with a variety of users to gain information and develop intra-system tradeoffs between different users as necessary; interact with a diverse client base and outside vendor contacts.
Document system builds and application configurations; maintain and update documentation as needed.
Provide technical analysis, design, development, conversion, and implementation work.
Work as a project leader, as needed, for projects of moderate complexity.
Serve as a technical resource for applications.
Compare, evaluate, and implement new features and technologies, and integrate them into the computing environment.
Follow team software development methodology.
Mentor lower level software developers.

Qualifications DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
3+ years of experience (or 1–2 years with a Master’s degree) developing and maintaining scalable, production-grade frontend and backend systems
Advanced programming skills in Python and React, with experience architecting systems that integrate and deploy LLMs
Proven expertise in prompt-engineering and fine-tuning LLMs for specific product and user needs
Experience leading structured and unstructured user research, with a strong foundation in UX design and HCI principles
Demonstrated ability to lead Figma design for complex UIs and entire re-branding and re-tooling of an app; ability to translate Figma designs into robust, accessible, and performant front-end implementations
Excellent cross-functional communication skills, with a track record of leading collaboration between engineering, medical, and research teams
Deep experience in Agile software development, sprint planning, and version control using GitHub
Designing and enforcing test strategies, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing for mission-critical applications
Demonstrated ability to mentor junior developers and volunteers in software development, technical content development, and inclusive design principles
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
Expertise in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications
Proficiency with application design and data modeling
Ability to define and solve logical problems for highly technical applications
Effective communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients
Ability to lead activities on structured team development projects
Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods
Knowledge of application domain
Physical Requirements
Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
Occasionally stand/walk, write by hand.
Rarely use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

The expected pay range for remote locations is $115,177 to $147,636 per annum; in Stanford work locations, the range is $138,402 to $163,985 per annum. Pay offers consider factors such as scope, responsibilities, qualifications, departmental budget, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay.
