Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking
Managing Tax Director
to lead our tax department with a focus on strategic direction, technical excellence, and operational effectiveness. This role is responsible for managing all tax-related functions including compliance, planning, risk management, and client advisory, while overseeing and developing a high-performing team. As a key member of the leadership team, the Managing Tax Director will also contribute to firm-wide initiatives and growth strategies.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the overall tax function including individual, corporate, partnership, and trust taxation.
Oversee tax planning and consulting for clients across multiple industries and jurisdictions.
Ensure timely and accurate tax filings in compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
Serve as a strategic advisor to clients on complex tax matters including structuring, transactions, succession planning, and regulatory changes.
Review and approve high-level tax returns and related documentation.
Maintain deep technical knowledge of evolving tax laws and lead internal updates and training.
Manage, mentor, and develop a team of tax professionals at all levels.
Monitor and improve departmental workflows, procedures, and use of tax technology tools.
Coordinate with external auditors, legal counsel, and tax authorities as needed.
Support business development efforts by building client relationships and identifying new service opportunities.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; Master’s in Taxation or JD preferred.
CPA license required.
10+ years of progressive tax experience, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership or director-level role.
Strong technical knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
Proven experience managing a team and client relationships.
Deep expertise in business taxation; experience with high-net-worth individuals is a plus.
Proficiency in tax preparation and research software (e.g., CCH Axcess, UltraTax, ProSystem fx, BNA, etc.).
Excellent analytical, leadership, and communication skills.
Strategic thinker with a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset.
Preferred Attributes
Previous experience in a public accounting firm or mid-sized tax advisory firm.
Comfortable leading change and improving operational efficiencies.
Strong presence and confidence in client-facing situations and team leadership.
