Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a global leader in the protection of unaccompanied and separated children who are forcibly displaced from their countries of origin. Launched in 2008, KIND champions a world in which every child’s rights and well-being are protected throughout their journey to safety. Building on its extensive programming and successful model in the United States, KIND is expanding in the Americas and Europe to bring its experience to bear in working with unaccompanied and separated children. Our work focuses on addressing the legal and mental health needs of this population; building strong partnerships and engaging in training and capacity strengthening with governments, NGOs, and the private sector; and advocating for systemic and pragmatic reforms to advance the rights of unaccompanied and separated children. Position Summary
KIND seeks a Managing Director, Baltimore to provide seasoned, disciplined, and effective management of the KIND field office, including performing independently in the areas of program and performance management, budgeting, employee relations, and development-support functions. As the head of KIND’s local office, the Managing Director, Baltimore is a critical member of the management team in KIND’s Legal Services division and is the senior representative of the organization at the local level – effectively engaging government, private sector partners, and community stakeholders to advance KIND’s mission. Managing Directors supervise Senior Attorneys and Managing Attorneys as well as other attorney and non-attorney staff as needed. The Managing Director will report to the Regional Director, Legal Services. Essential Functions include mentoring KIND pro bono attorneys and, as needed, limited direct representation of KIND clients; supervising and guiding representation responsibilities; managing field office operations, program quality, staff performance, and integration with the Legal Programs department; monitoring immigration law changes and communicating them to internal and external stakeholders; developing and implementing management strategies to meet programmatic and funding priorities; overseeing mentoring programs and direct representation services in relevant contexts; ensuring data integrity and use of case management tools; promoting volunteer engagement and external partnerships; serving as liaison with KIND headquarters and other departments; maintaining stakeholder relations and coalition work; ensuring compliance with grant and funding requirements; budget management and expenditures tracking; participating in local and national special projects; collaborating with Social Services and other teams; and upholding leadership characteristics that support KIND’s mission. Qualifications And Requirements
J.D. and admitted to state bar Minimum of 7 years of experience practicing immigration law, including humanitarian immigration claims (asylum, U visas, T visas, S.I.J.) Minimum of 5 years of experience working with children, preferably immigrant and refugee children, and/or survivors of abuse, human trafficking, or other trauma Minimum of 4 years of experience supervising attorneys and non-attorney staff Minimum of 3 years of program management experience Minimum of 2 years of experience working with law firm attorneys and/or legal volunteers Experience with children or detained settings preferred Experience in national or larger management structures preferred Strong cultural competence and cross-cultural communication skills Effective written and oral communication in English Microsoft Office proficiency (Teams, Excel, etc.) Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment Strong organizational and multitasking abilities Commitment to wellbeing and work–life balance Remote-work experience preferred but not required Our Benefits
