Aquatics Instructor

Provide safe and quality swim lesson instruction for various age groups. Essential duties and responsibilities include teaching class content appropriate to the course description, level and within certification guidelines; monitoring participants and assessing skills; providing a safe environment for all participants; completing any necessary reports and forms; and responsible for finding a dependable, appropriate substitute upon their absence. Perform related work as required and assigned. Enforces all pool rules and regulations. Responsible for preparation of class; prepares lesson plans, organizes teaching equipment; may be required to set-up and break-down materials used for instruction. Average number of hours per week 12-15. Job Qualifications

Must be at least 15 years old. Knowledge - Thorough knowledge of departmental rules and regulations; principles, practices; knowledge of swimming strokes and techniques; teaching methods and techniques that provide positive motivation; working knowledge of rules, strategies, and skills; organizational procedures. Skills: Be able to proficiently perform various swim strokes for 25 yards; demonstrated skill in the operation of equipment necessary to perform the functions of the job. Abilities - Instruct large groups of people; follow instructions; communicate effectively to the participants when teaching; analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine proper courses of action to be taken; analyze and correct facility safety hazards; write reports as necessary; learn and adhere to the facility emergency procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public. Education and Experience

Evidence of qualifications: Training

Starfish Aquatic Institute Certification preferred, training provided for selected candidates. Experience - Previous instructional experience preferred. Or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Work Environment

Working environment will be hot/humid, cool/damp, wet and noisy. 95% of the work is done primarily in a wet environment. During summer months, work may be at an outdoor facility and will include exposure to all types of weather. Exposure to chemically treated water for a minimum of 4 hours per day. Must be able to work in an environment with poor acoustics and an array of distractions, i.e., music, weather conditions, etc. Requires ability to recognize and respond to sounds/signals of distress. Requires ability to sit, stand, knee, crouch, walk and reach with arms for extended periods of time and speak loudly. Ability to lift 50 lbs.
