Aquatics Specialist
The purpose of this position is to assist with the operation, safety, and maintenance of the Aquatics Center and to help with the activities of the Lifeguards and Head Lifeguards in an indoor and outdoor setting. The Aquatics Specialist will assist the Aquatics Division staff with existing and special programs. The position will help monitor the Aquatics Center building and grounds and assist with supervising aquatics staff, including providing ongoing training and assistance for all assignments associated with but not limited to, Head Lifeguards, Lifeguards, and front desk staff. Help assist the "Learn to Swim" program by preparing notices and distributing rosters and attendance sheets. This position is required to be onsite during programming timeframes. Monitor facility and guests, including responding to incidents and emergencies, conducting facility and grounds checks, enforcing facility policies and procedures, and opening/closing the facility. Responsible for assisting the Aquatics Center and operation of the staff by: performing opening, daily, and closing duties, conduct and/or facilitate lifeguard training, certifications, in-services, staff audits, and ensure safety of guests through effective scanning, enforcing employee policies and procedures. Perform facility maintenance and basic janitorial duties, including preparing facility maintenance work orders, cleaning tables, chairs, desks, benches, and counters, picking up trash in and around the facility, sanitizing rooms, equipment, and maintaining restrooms. Maintain all health and safety standards. Complete and analyze pool water chemistry and reports. Provide excellent customer service, which includes on an as-needed basis: registering participants for programs, assisting with membership enrollment, assisting with rentals, responding to inquiries about facilities and programs, checking in members, conducting facility tours, greeting all guests, and selling city merchandise. Perform cash handling and accounting procedures on as as-needed basis including: preparing daily deposits, printing transaction reports, performing daily opening and closing accounting procedures, balancing cash drawers, printing receipts, printing daily accounting summary records, securing money, and receiving and processing payment transactions. Perform administrative and clerical duties. Perform other duties assigned by Supervisor. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. Must be at least 18 years of age. Minimum of two (2) years of lifeguard experience, with at least one (1) year of head guard experience preferred. Possess knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check, drug and alcohol test, and a motor vehicle review. The position requires regular interaction with the exchange and receipt of information. Customer service skills and the ability to interact with guests on a daily basis. Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management, peers, and guests. This position normally performs duties after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review. Use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment. Ability to remain attentive and alert during long periods of time. Basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, writing, and math, including, but not limited to, the ability to compose complete sentences, understand common complex words and phrases, and perform basic math functions such as fractions, percentages, measurements, and ratios/proportions. Required to work mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to attend mandatory in-service meetings and trainings. Must be able to work on-call schedule as necessary. Required to perform and pass swimming and lifeguarding abilities test. This position is classified as a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment. Required to work Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. during September to May. Will rotate as Manager on Duty during the summer months. Must have valid driver's license with good driving record and ability to maintain while employed. Requires valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification for the duration of employment. The American Red Cross Instructor certification is desired or willing to obtain within three (3) months of hire. The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification is desired or willing to obtain within three (3) months of hire. Work performed requires the ability to tolerate regular adverse conditions such as working outside in extreme weather conditions and working in environments with a heavy chemical presence. The position requires lifting 10-25 lbs.
