Overview
The University of New Mexico’s Institute Center for Geospatial and Population Studies (GPS) maintains New Mexico's traffic crash database for the New Mexico Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Division and supports the New Mexico State Demographer’s Office. GPS provides UNM students with real-life job skills and helps government agencies, lawmakers, and the public with data-driven decisions by delivering impartial data and objective analysis. GPS seeks to hire entry-level Student Data Analysts and train them in data collection, GIS, and data analysis using traffic crash data.
We are seeking detail-oriented, self-motivated students from any degree program to contribute their expertise in data analysis, data entry, verification, geocoding, and publishing traffic crash data. This position includes routine maintenance of the traffic crash database and opportunities to expand analysis or programming skills to solve real-world problems. Onsite training in languages and programs including SAS, SQL, and VBA will be provided, along with statistical data analysis, data processing and integration, trend analysis, data entry and cleaning, GIS services, web mapping, and geospatial analysis.
This position requires an organized individual with initiative, attention to detail, and excellent time management skills. Benefits include flexible work hours and regular pay increases with progress.
Responsibilities
- Provide data analysis, data entry, verification, geocoding, and publishing of traffic crash data.
- Assist with routine maintenance of the traffic crash database and expand analysis or programming skills.
- Support training in data collection, GIS, and data analysis using traffic crash data.
- Learn and apply languages and programs such as SAS, SQL, and VBA; support statistical data analysis and data processing.
- Contribute to data processing, data cleaning, web mapping, and geospatial analysis tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Enrolled in a degree-seeking program at UNM; enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count).
- If Work Study, must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications: Enrolled in a degree-seeking program at UNM, at least half-time (6 hours); able to work a minimum of 10-20 hours per week; ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information; ability to follow instructions and adhere to protocols and procedures; attention to detail; works well as a team member on various projects; willingness to perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
- Preferred Qualifications: Work Study students; interest in database systems, spreadsheets, and data analysis; proficiency in at least one data analysis programming language (e.g., R, Python, SAS, SQL, VBA); experience with data input, validation, and error correction; knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative research procedures; prior ArcGIS/ArcPro experience; experience with statistical data analysis, data processing, and trend analysis.
