Description
Sappi North America is seeking a talented and motivated individual to join its agile procurement team. The Senior Manager, Procurement will operate in a highly matrixed environment and will plan and procure direct as well as indirect materials and services for SNA using available resources and methods in an efficient and effective manner. Depending on prior experience and organizational needs, commodities may include Pulp, Logistics, Capital, and Indirect Procurement categories. The role involves leading strategic sourcing initiatives across multiple commodity categories and helping leverage spend at the highest possible level, both locally and globally. This position may be based in Boston, MA, Portland, ME or Skowhegan, ME. Essential Position Responsibilities
Provide strategic direction to Procurement staff to develop and execute commodity-specific strategic sourcing plans that target reductions, ensure security of supply, manage financial exposure/risk, and support efficient, high-quality mill operations. Develop and implement key negotiation strategies with current and new suppliers across multiple procurement areas; function as a resource for corporate-level negotiations. Analyze spend, develop spend sub-groupings and sourcing strategies, and implement the strategic sourcing process to improve third-party spend effectiveness. Ensure mill-level procurement activities support mill operations efficiently while delivering required results. Assist Commodity Managers with sourcing plans, internal data discovery, scope and specification development, market due diligence, competitive intelligence, RFIs, and RFPs. Collect and evaluate RFIs and RFPs using best-in-class sourcing tools, techniques, and practices. Negotiate complex agreements, statements of work, and service level agreements with manufacturers, distributors, and service providers, leading a team. Facilitate Sappi’s internal process for approval, execution, and lifecycle management of agreements. Lead the implementation and rollout of negotiated agreements to ensure full utilization and supplier compliance with terms. Identify opportunities for continuous improvement through structural cost reduction and performance improvement involving suppliers as required. Measure supplier performance against key business objectives; participate in formal supplier business reviews, evaluations, and audits. Provide functional strategic direction to Procurement staff to integrate procurement strategies into a comprehensive execution plan that delivers value to customers, stakeholders, and suppliers. Collaborate with Manufacturing and R&D to identify opportunities to use lower-cost alternatives and material substitutions. Minimum Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, supply chain management, purchasing, logistics, paper science, or related field from an accredited institution. 8–15 years of procurement experience or equivalent experience developing business acumen and collaborative skills; hiring level may be adjusted based on experience. Ability to translate vision into actionable tasks; proficient in various sourcing techniques. Understanding of economic principles and market conditions. Creativity in problem solving; ability to work cross-functionally at all levels of the organization. Negotiation, consulting, and supplier relationship management skills; capability to constructively challenge senior management when appropriate. Strong project and people management skills with the ability to multi-task and adapt to changing priorities. Self-starter with minimal supervision; demonstrated leadership abilities. Advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint; familiarity with AI tools; experience with ERP systems such as SAP is a plus.
