Title: Mechanic

Supervisor: Reports to Director of Transporation

Summary/Objective: Perform skilled work in all phases of vehicular maintenance and repair on buses, vans, trucks, passenger vehicles, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Ohio BCI and Federal Background check free of disqualifying infractions
  • Obtain an OHID, Educator ID and successfully enroll in Rapback
  • Valid CDL license of Class "B" school bus or the ability to obtain one
  • Comply with drug-free workplace rules and board policies
  • Participate (and pass where applicable) in all required trainings, including but not limited to: Bloodborne Pathogens, Crisis Intervention, Educator Ethics, etc.
  • Performs basic computer skills as they relate to the position
  • Conveys organizational and problem solving skills
  • Embody high ethical standards, integrity, and accept responsibility for decisions and conduct
  • Preferred: Knowledge of State of Ohio Highway Patrol bus inspection requirements
Essential Functions:
  • Maintain a safe and reliable bus and vehicle fleet
  • Provide inspections, service, repair, and upkeep of the bus fleet, and vehicles in sound mechanical condition. This includes the implementation of a preventative maintenance and general maintenance program as well as providing immediate repair/maintenance
  • Evaluate mechanical problems using various diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems to include but not limited to engines, transmissions, chassis, suspensions, electrical and cooling systems, exhausts, chair lifts, etc
  • Prepare and maintain bus fleet according to the State of Ohio Highway Patrol bus inspection requirements
  • Responsible for creating, tracking, and maintaining records of all preventative maintenance and general repair work on bus and vehicle fleet
  • Perform preventative maintenance procedures (e.g. oil changes, brakes, tire rotation, lights, PMI safety inspection, etc) for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition and meeting mandated requirements
  • Performs minor body work (e.g. front ends, fenders, bumpers, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicle fleet
  • Responds to service calls regarding disabled vehicles for the purpose of performing emergency repair work in the field
  • Must keep accurate inventory records through an inventory tracking system
  • Ensures compliance on a day to day basis with state, federal and district requirements. Ensures safe environment exists and that all maintenance and related activities are in conformance with district policies and regulatory requirements
  • Responsible for the efficient, clean, safe, and secure operation of the garage, helping to keep garage, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information
  • Perform other specific duties as assigned

  • Work at various heights, in confined spaces, and/or invariable/diminished lighting
  • Report misconduct or violations of policy and procedures to the direct supervisor, appropriate administrator or legal authority (mandated reporting)
  • Use of air tools, hydraulic tools that operate with the use of electricity (110V and 220V)
