Overview

Position Title: Staff Accountant. Accountability: Staff Accountant reports to the Chief of Staff. Job Classification: Full-time, salary, exempt – benefits eligible.

About: Daniel Stowe Conservancy (Stowe) inspires a love of nature and its beauty through unforgettable outdoor experiences. The nearly 400 acres of Stowe provide visitors with a chance to reconnect with nature in all seasons. The property welcomes guests to gardens, a conservatory, fountains, trails, and a dog park.

The Staff Accountant is responsible for leading and providing support in the areas of finance and accounting for Daniel Stowe Conservancy and its partners. This role administers accounting functions including AR, AP, Cost, Fixed Assets, and payroll. The Staff Accountant will coordinate budgets, forecasts, cost information, and financial controls to ensure best fiscal policies and procedures. An ideal candidate has strong working relationships with internal and external partners, is an independent worker, detail-oriented, and able to identify problems and propose solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Understands the importance of guests and members and strives for excellence to ensure an optimal experience.
  • Manage planned or unplanned weekly communications to individuals and/or organizations.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Represent the mission statements of Stowe and its partners, support staff and leadership in pursuing goals.
  • Perform other duties needed to help drive the vision, fulfill the mission, and adhere to values.
  • Accounts Payable & Receivable: manage end-to-end processes for AP/AR, including processing invoices, coding, payment execution (ACH, checks, wires), monitoring outstanding balances, backlog control, and resolving discrepancies.
  • Intercompany billing and credit processes, including invoicing and adjustments as necessary.
  • Reporting & Reconciliation: prepare and distribute periodic financial reports; enter monthly journal entries; assist with reconciliations; support month-end and year-end close; maintain general ledger, fixed assets, amortization, and Capex/CIP reconciliations per US GAAP; monitor internal reporting requirements and exceptions.
  • Operational & Administrative Support: manage incoming financial documentation, respond to service requests, assist with administrative tasks and special projects; ensure compliance with accounting controls; participate in process improvement initiatives.

  • Successfully pass a standard criminal background review.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Experience & Education

  • Experience with QuickBooks Online at a skilled level.
  • Associate’s degree in accounting or related field.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant accounting experience.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Flexibility and resilience to work under pressure and adapt to changing needs.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently.
