Job Summary

Performs chair-side assistance in all phases of emergency dentistry, pediatric, orthodontic, prosthodontics, limited endodontic, limited oral surgery, and periodontics. Includes preventive and daily maintenance of dental operatories and equipment, clerical assignments, radiological duties, and receptionist responsibilities. Serves as a liaison for patients, staff, students, residents, and faculty within the dental college.

Responsibilities

  • Chair-side assistance for patients requiring emergency restorative, prosthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, and/or oral surgery; participate in 4-handed dentistry; manage air, water, and instruments; mix materials; assist with difficult or apprehensive patients; assist with rubber dam placement; prepare local anesthetic syringe; dispose of sharps after patient dismissal; perform high-volume evacuation; maintain infection control and PPE guidelines.
  • Operate dental x-ray equipment, take routine and specialized radiographs; explain procedures to patients; ensure protection with lead aprons; obtain and store dental supplies; keep operatories clean and stocked; maintain dental equipment daily; manage instrument packaging and sterilization processes.
  • Support appointment scheduling, follow-up care, and inventory control of supplies, equipment, and dental instruments.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent with one year of related experience, or
  • Certified Dental Assistant and/or an Associate's degree or higher in an applicable related field from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduation from a certified Dental Assisting program with 3 years of experience, including dental material mixing, taking x-rays, and chair-side assist across multiple dental disciplines.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of oral anatomy, bony structures of the face, radiographic techniques, dental instruments, and basic dental lab assisting procedures.
  • Ability to detect adverse reactions to dental treatment; knowledge of 4-handed dentistry; ability to transition between multiple dentists and procedures; ability to work in high-volume, fast-paced environments while maintaining composure.
  • Skills: flexibility and adaptability to changing procedures, methods, and personalities.
  • Abilities: maintain confidentiality; place rubber dam clamps; manage multiple dentists and procedures; handle sensitive information per cybersecurity and privacy policies.

Shift / Salary / Benefits

  • Shift: Days, Monday–Friday
  • Salary: Minimum $16.54/hour; pay commensurate with qualifications within the established range
  • Benefits: Health/dental/life insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, holidays; Tuition Assistance Program eligibility after 6 months of employment for some full-time staff
