Director of the UMSOM Center of Excellence for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and Hemoglobinopathies and Chief of UMMS SCD Care Network The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), through its Hematology/Oncology program and in partnership with University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) and University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), seeks a visionary leader to direct clinical, research, educational and community engagement missions to care for patients with sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies. The ideal candidate will be an internationally renowned expert with a track record in patient care and innovative research in the field. The candidate should have administrative and leadership experience, and prior success in building teams of professionals with complementary expertise. A strong interest in creating clinical programs, new service delivery models, and building linkages across System locations for optimal care delivery is highly desired. Qualifications Board certified or eligible in hematology Eligible for Maryland medical license Experience in building and leading clinical programs and translational research programs in pediatric and adult sickle cell disease Evidence of extensive and ongoing academic accomplishments (high-impact publications, robust research grant portfolio, mentoring success, recognition by professional societies and government agencies) Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at the University of Maryland School of Medicine Experience recruiting and retaining faculty across the tri-partite mission Experience with philanthropy and securing support from clinical and research programs Network Responsibilities In collaboration with leaders across the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), UMSOM and Faculty Practice Incorporated (FPI), advance the research, clinical, and educational missions related to patients with sickle cell disease Develop the strategic vision and mission for a Sickle Cell Disease Program throughout the UMMS network that will serve as a national model and the program of reference for the region Responsible for securing innovative clinical trials in sickle cell disease and translating them into national best practices of care Lead stakeholders across the network and region to adopt measures and interventions that reduce health disparities in the care of patients with sickle cell disease Actively seek government, private and public partnerships and funding support that contribute to the advancement of health outcomes for patients living with sickle cell disease Partner with non-UMMS organizations within the region to adopt innovative care models for sickle cell disease Continually evaluate UMMS facilities for clinical preparedness and institutional readiness by assessing clinical services, resource allocation and research engagement required to perform high-level care for sickle cell disease Organize system clinical pathways for patients seeking traditional care as well as advanced treatment options such as gene therapy Teaching Responsibilities Actively participate in teaching, training, and mentoring of medical students, residents and fellows, and junior faculty and other members of the care delivery team Expected to actively participate in community-facing educational programs Candidates with strong interest in clinical/translational research are preferred. Interaction with basic and translational scientists is encouraged. Candidates must possess an M.D. or D.O. degree and be board certified or board-eligible by ABIM in Internal Medicine and hematology and/or medical oncology, and be eligible for a Maryland medical license. Expected rank is Associate Professor or higher; rank and tenure status depend on qualifications. The expected salary range for Associate Professors is $238,400 (min) to $418,300 (max). This range reflects base pay based on faculty rank and years in rank and does not include all components of the faculty compensation program. The actual compensation may vary. The salary range reflects the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end. Actual compensation will depend on multiple factors including location, skills, experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors determined by the University.
