Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of medical terminology and medical abbreviations. Basic mathematical skills to compute proportions and compounds. Ability to type/keyboard. Ability to proficiently read, write, and speak English. Knowledge of brand and generic drug names. Knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to prescriptions. Knowledge of insurance plan rules relating to eligible drugs. Knowledge of computerized pharmacy record keeping and credit procedures. Knowledge of hospital or retail pharmacy's procedures for filling, dispensing, and billing prescriptions. Ability to use computers, automated dispensing machines, medication safety system, medication packager, controlled substances safe, prescription scanning/filling/checking system. POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT: Works under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager, Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, Lead Pharmacist, Pharmacist, Certified Lead Pharmacy Technician to assist in the provision of pharmaceuticals to customers of the pharmacy, and perform related duties as assigned. Major Job Duties and Tasks Percentage of time 1. Provides customer service to internal and external customers. Assures that all customers of the pharmacy are provided with high quality service in a timely fashion, whether in person, on the phone or by other means according to standards established by the department. Directs customers to the Pharmacist as necessary.

Assures that the phone is answered according to department standards.

Uses department scripting according to department standards.

40% 2. Accurately fills and labels medication orders in the area of assignment (IP, OP, etc.) Maintains and fills automated dispensing equipment following established procedures of the department.

Prepares bulk compounded products by following instructions for calculating, measuring, mixing, and labeling.

Performs calculations to apportion ingredients accurately for compounds and other preparations.

Checks unit dose medications in accordance with departmental procedures.

Prepares prescription orders for delivery to the customer.

Processes medication returns and interdepartmental transfers of medication.

35% 3. Assists with inventory management to assure on-hand counts are correct in the computer systems, checks for outdated product on the shelf and assures that adequate supplies are on hand to facilitate work. Issues supply medications to other departments.

Maintains and replenishes approved stocks of drugs including crash carts, emergency drug boxes, and controlled substances.

Performs all floor and clinic stations checks as assigned.

Checks in medication orders from suppliers and rotates stock.

Dispenses controlled substances and maintains inventory following established procedures.

15% 4. Maintains records in compliance with legal requirements, department policies and procedures. Transcribes medication information from the prescription into the patient profiles for review by the pharmacist.

Assures that all patients are entered into the electronic data base accurately for prescription processing, billing and record keeping functions.

Follows established procedures when operating the cash register system.

5% 5. Assures the department that the equipment is always maintained in a clean and orderly fashion. 3% 6. Technicians perform repeated tasks with hands and wrists to open medication bottles, package medications, and prepare injectable sterile products. There is 4 to 8 hours of intermittent computer screen viewing and use of mouse/keyboard each day. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Please list unusual environmental conditions, if any (e.g., extremely cramped quarters, noise, fumes, gases, extreme heat/cold, etc.). Works in a hospital pharmacy where space is limited and crowded conditions make it noisy. Certified Pharmacy Technicians are exposed to toxic chemotherapy medications, acetic acid, alcohol, and other dangerous chemicals, but have precautionary procedures for handling these. The work area is adequately ventilated. May encounter customers who are upset, angry or abusive. May be exposed to communicable diseases during patient contact.
