AMERICAN LEARNING SYSTEMS / C&L BUSING JOB TITLE Diesel Technician DIVISION/ DEPARTMENT Transportation/ C & L Busing LOCATION Broward REPORTS TO Director of Transportation EXEMPTION STATUS Non-Exempt; Year-Round

POSITION OVERVIEW The Diesel Technician position is to repair and maintain ALL mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and air conditioning systems on our fleet of school buses, light and heavy-duty vehicles. Responsible for ensuring the functionality and reliability of machines, engines, and mechanical systems. The position is responsible for the maintenance parts and repair operation of the school division’s bus fleet and other vehicles so that the fleet will be kept in a state of operating excellence so that vehicles present no problems or interruptions to the educational program. Fleet operations and repairs shall meet and be in compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Directed by the Fleet Manager to repair and maintain operations for ALL mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and air conditioning systems on our fleet of school buses, light and heavy-duty vehicles, including garage operations.

Build and assemble machines or mechanical components that meet and comply with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.

Inspect machines, engines, transmissions, etc., and run diagnostic tests to discover functionality issues Troubleshoot reported problems and resolve them in a timely manner

Perform maintenance on machinery, equipment, vehicles, and systems. Provide thorough documentation

Conduct repairs aiming for maximum reliability

Service and schedule buses for maintenance at the directive of the Fleet Manager Replenish fluids and components of engines and machinery

Clean and apply lubricants to machinery components

Performs tire work for the purpose of ensuring all buses and equipment are operating on safe tires (e.g. changing, balancing) Tire repairs; lube oil and filter changes; minor electrical repairs (bulbs, flashers, fuses); mirror replacement; minor road service; service fuels and fluids.

SECONDARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain inventory of parts and supplies

Facilitate the transport of various items(e.g. tools, equipment, supplies) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at the job site

Responds to emergency situations during and outside regular work hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns, including emergency breakdowns and service

Provide consultation on correct maintenance and preventative measures to machine or vehicle users Recommend the usage of company-owned vehicles

Undertake other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE Proven experience as a Diesel Technician

Valid certification (e.g. ASE) is preferred

Certification from a vocational school or completion of an apprenticeship is a definite plus

Experience with International and Cummins engines preferred

Preferred to possess own mechanic’s tools needed to perform the required duties

A valid commercial driver's license (CDL) class B minimum preferred not required. The P & S endorsement is preferred

2 years of minimum experience on diesel engines Diagnostic and repair

ASE or equivalent certifications are a plus

Must be able to pass a background check and drug test

SKILLS & ABILITIES Excellent knowledge of machinery and hydraulic, electrical, and other systems and their components

Aptitude in using various hand tools (screwdrivers, hammers, etc.) and precision measurement tools (e.g. calipers)

Great attention to detail

Required ability to work with various machines and tools as well as follow all safety precautions.

Ability to follow established procedures and practices and read instructions and manuals.

Strong commitment to all health and safety guidelines

Will travel between both campuses or various locations to analyze, repair, or transfer fleet machines
