Job Summary
The Kennel Care Technician provides daily care for shelter animals, including cleaning, feeding, medicating, and monitoring health and behavior. This position also plays a key role in customer service by greeting visitors, answering inquiries, assisting with intakes, adoptions, and lost or reclaimed pets, and managing front desk responsibilities. The role is essential to ensuring the well-being of animals while delivering professional, compassionate service to the community. Major Duties
Cleans and maintains kennel grounds; cleans and sanitizes animal enclosures; cleans and maintains offices, restrooms, etc. Feeds and assists in medicating animals. Assists in evaluating and placing animals; evaluates pets for adoption; networks with rescue groups to place animals. Answers telephone and greets visitors; provides information and assistance. Assists with animal euthanasia as required. Performs animal intakes; assesses animals; records pertinent information. Assists customers with lost animal reports, animal reclamations, and adoptions. Monitors animals for behavior and health concerns; reports issues as needed. Restocks material, food, and supply inventories. Performs related duties. Minimum Qualifications
Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain Certified Euthanasia Technician certification. Knowledge of customer service principles and practices. Knowledge of animal care principles. Knowledge of animal behavior. Knowledge of the principles and practices of animal shelter operation. Knowledge of building maintenance principles. Skill in the use of computers and job-related software programs. Skill in the provision of animal care. Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions. Complexity/Scope of Work The work consists of related animal care and kennel maintenance duties. Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to provide care for animals in the kennel and to participate in the maintenance of kennel facilities. Successful performance contributes to the effective housing and care of animals. Contacts Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, pet owners, veterinarians, representatives of animal rescue groups, volunteers, vendors, and the general public. Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services. Physical Demands/Work Environment The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work is typically performed in an animal shelter and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and potentially dangerous animals. The employee uses protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. Supervisory and Management Responsibility None.
