Recreation Programmer

This classification involves directing the City's recreation programs, events, services, and related facilities for Leisure Services. An employee in this position plans, directs, organizes, promotes, schedules, and implements aquatics programs for seniors, adults, and/or youth to meet community needs; oversees programs in areas such as cultural arts, wellness, camp, special interest class, special events, human services, aquatic activities, and general recreation; and coordinates/oversees related storage areas and facilities. This position also works at various special events and supervises training workshops. Aquatics The classification involves determining needs with the assigned area of recreation programming responsibility; planning for programs and making the necessary facility arrangements to meet these needs; participating in departmental planning, research and implementation of surveys and studies regarding recreation programming and facility needs; recommending procedures and policies which will facilitate effective recreation programs and efficient facility management. Coordinate recreation staff in the development and implementation of community special events. Promote water safety and drowning prevention through public education, partnerships, and community outreach. Create, implement, and evaluate a diverse range of aquatic programs, including swim lessons, water safety classes, lifeguard certification courses, lap swimming, and special aquatic events. Develop lesson plans and training curricula for swim instructors to ensure high-quality delivery of instructional programs. Work closely with swim team/swim lesson contractor to ensure smooth operations related to swim lesson scheduling, invoicing, and ongoing communication. Enter and maintain swim lesson schedules in RecTrac, ensuring accuracy and timely updates. Assist in coordinating schedules and maintaining related records and statistics for special events. Coordinate programs in assigned area of responsibility to include: registrations, collection of fees, management of volunteers, scheduling activity times, distributing and collecting all necessary event equipment and supplies, collecting feedback from participants to identify areas for improvement and/or new programming opportunities. Perform a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, preparing correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies needed for events, leading recreation activities, making arrangements for rental and use of recreation facilities, reviewing incident/accident reports related to specific areas of responsibility, helping set up and break-down of special events, responding to and resolving complaints from participants/patrons/contractors. Assist in the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of lifeguards, swim instructors, and volunteers. Coordinate and oversee the operation, maintenance, and cleanliness of various aquatic facilities and their inventory. Assist with the implementation of a public relations program with the general public and special interest groups in cooperation with the department's public relations coordinator; provides information to department officials in preparing preliminary publicity for events and programs. Serve as a member of various employee committees, as assigned. Respond to public inquiries about programming, special events, and facilities. Assists the Recreation Supervisor in the preparation of budget requests relative to program needs; assists with monitoring budget for assigned program area, prepares requisitions for purchase of services, equipment and supplies; maintains records and prepares program evaluations and other related reports. Supervise, train and evaluate employees and volunteers assigned to area of operation. Supervise and oversee the performance of contractors providing services and materials. Organize and coordinate special events; schedules recreation program staff and arranges for the scheduling of contractual staff and submits payments for related services. Write and submit information for Horizons magazine and other City published material; composes event calendar and flyers. Recreation Programmers may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate recreation programs/events. Perform related work as required. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree or an acceptable combination of education, work experience and specialized training. Bachelor's Degree in Park and Recreation Programming, Recreation Administration or a closely related field preferred. Reasonable full-time professional experience in planning, organizing and conducting a variety of recreation programs Supervisory experience preferred Certifications preferred: Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or Pool Operator (CPO); Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP), Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) required RecTrac computer software preferred Possession of a valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record Light to moderate physical effort required, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to thirty (30) pounds. The position requires the ability to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time. Incumbent must have the ability to effectively and safely operate City-issued motor vehicles. Work is performed in various environments including standard office, recreational facilities, and outdoors. Work hours may vary as needed and may include evenings, weekends and holidays. Tasks are regularly performed with moderate exposure to adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather, severe temperatures and exposure to water. The position may require travel to various locations in the City of Sunrise area. The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Requires ability to adapt to frequent changes in workload and to adjust priorities quickly as circumstances dictate while completing tasks within established time frames. It also requires interaction with employees and officials from all City departments/divisions, vendors and the general public. Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of public recreation Knowledge of recreation philosophy, planning and administration Knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program Knowledge of the principles and techniques of first aid and CPR Knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the area of assignment Understanding of supervisory principles and practices Ability to plan and supervise the activities of subordinate personnel in the absence of the Recreation Supervisor to achieve effective results Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, other employees, supervisors, other agencies, instructors, community leaders and the general public Ability to express ideas thoroughly and concisely, orally and in writing Ability to supervise the activities of recreational personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale Ability to develop, coordinate and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program Ability to plan and organize workload to achieve stated objectives in a timely, efficient, and effective manner Ability to withstand pressure of competing priorities and varied responsibilities and work efficiently and effectively to develop win-win solutions Knowledge of RecTrac computer software is preferred Knowledge of Microsoft Office is required
