Electrical Technician

The top salary range for this position currently reaches $96,298.02, PLUS, an excellent benefits package! Under general supervision, to perform skilled electrical work in installation and maintenance of street and lot lighting and traffic signal systems; and to do other work as required.

Incumbents perform journeyman-level electrical and electronic construction and repair work; and they give specific work instructions to less-skilled electrical workers, and check their work. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Installs street and parking lot lighting and traffic signal systems; uses construction and electrical equipment in installing conduit, junction boxes, standards, signal heads, controllers and repairing timing gears, motors and other fixtures; pulls and splices wire; establishes feed points for lighting systems; converts multiple lines to series circuits; may assist in the repair of sidewalks and curbs, particularly where maintenance work has occurred; assists in ground surveys for location of standards; repairs and replaces controllers, solenoids, coil relays and small motors; may patrol systems, assuring proper operation and replacing lamps and fuses and making emergency repairs; may inspect construction by contractors; gives work instructions to assigned helpers; trains helpers, and checks their work.

Knowledge of: Principles and practices of electrical system construction, maintenance and operation; tools and terminology used in electrical construction and repair work; electric and electronics theory; basic procedures and equipment used in street lighting and traffic signal systems.

Ability to: Diagnose electrical malfunctions and make on the spot repairs; perform skilled electrical construction and repair work; read and interpret wiring diagrams, plans and specifications; operate electrical tools and contractor's equipment; work safely in accordance with approved safety techniques and orders; deal effectively with the public and co-workers, and contractors while on an inspection assignment.

Experience and/or Education: One year performing journeyman electrician level work; equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by courses in electrical and electronic theory.

Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 15 pounds is required. Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, crouching and stooping in the performance of daily office activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in retrieving and entering data using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading work related documents and using the computer, and acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service.

Work Environment: Employee generally works in a standard office setting and outdoors. Employee may travel to different locations and may be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, or dust or potentially hazardous chemicals. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high and the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones and/or members of the public. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.
