POSITION OVERVIEW: The Data Communications team designs, configures, maintains, upgrades and monitors UCSDs campus-wide local, wide area, and wireless networks. It supports the campus's enterprise routers, switches, wireless access points and associated management tools. These devices operate on Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, and other technologies in a heterogeneous multi-protocol environment. Provides design, engineering, and maintenance assistance on the UCSD campus fiber and ethernet LAN/WAN networks. Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced communications professional with a full understanding of industry practices and relevant policies and procedures in providing consultation, evaluation, configuration, installation, troubleshooting and testing of network hardware and software to include routers, switches, wireless access-points and controllers, along with other networking equipment. Utilize various software and network management tools such as Cisco Catalyst Center, NetMRI, and Statseeker to analyze network traffic and resolve a wide range of complex issues. Responsibilities: Provides design, engineering and maintenance assistance on the UCSD campus LAN/WAN/WLAN. Provides consultation, evaluation, installation and testing of network devices and network management systems to include routers, switches, wireless access points, controllers, and other network equipment manufactured by Cisco and other vendors in a heterogeneous multi-protocol environment. Installs and troubleshoots devices on campus fiber optic, ethernet, and wireless networks. Applies skills as an experienced data communications professional with a full understanding of industry practices and relevant policies and procedures. Resolves a wide range of complex network issues. Demonstrates competency in selecting methods and techniques to obtain long-term network solutions. QUALIFICATIONS
Thorough understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software, including understanding of OSI layer 3 protocols at a basic level, layer 2 protocols at an advanced level, and related technical standards critical to the operation of complex interconnected networks. Knowledge of and skilled with TCP/IP, SNMP, 802.11, Ethernet, routing protocols and related protocols and concepts. Knowledge of and skilled with Cisco switches, routers, access points and similar systems. Demonstrated thorough knowledge of professional data communications and network concepts necessary to resolve issues using established parameters, creativity and independent judgment, escalating as necessary. Proven skill in analyzing and designing new and upgraded fiber optic, twisted pair and Ethernet networks. Knowledge of principles of fiber optic, and Ethernet media systems including nomenclature, industry standards, methods and sources of information. Proven skill in interpreting voice, video and data communications protocols and specifications pertaining to fiber optic, and Ethernet, with ability to select proper medium for a given application. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Excellent interpersonal skills including oral and written communications. Able to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner. Skilled in communicating with campus management, including high-level technical professionals, on matters where University objectives and data communication systems are involved. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Ability to set priorities to be self-directed, based on relative importance of job responsibilities. Ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Employee must be available to work evenings and flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as necessary. Employee must be able to work on a regular rotating on-call basis. Employee must be able to perform regular onsite visits to campus. Not a remote position. Required to hold valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program. Employee must be available to travel as required. Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on background check results. This position has recently been accreted by TX union and will be a part of that union moving forward Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $88,000 - $161,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $42.15 - $77.39 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
