Overview
Inova Loudoun Hospital (ILH) is a nationally recognized, advanced community hospital. Inova hospitals are unified operationally and strategically by Service Lines, including a Medicine Service Line (MSL). The ILH Hospitalist Group (the Group) is comprised of Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) who provide care to patients under the medicine service. The Group is led by the Medical Director and works as a team to provide high quality care to ILH patients through implementation of Inova's mission, vision and values. Central to the Medical Director position is the ability to manage the administrative structure and operating needs of the Group while creating a team environment and unifying the team toward the Group's mission and vision and toward ILH and MSL initiatives. The Medical Director acts as the primary Group representative and liaison for other departments and leadership across ILH and the MSL, and serves as a Project Manager to develop, guide and track outcomes for Group projects and ensure appropriate resource allocation. The Medical Director balances the interests and priorities of the Group with those of ILH and MSL and demonstrates exceptional organizational skills and professional communication with mutual respect, objectivity, patience, and integrity. Medical Director – Adult Hospitalist Medicine Group
Responsibilities and duties General Group administration and operations
Contribute to the development, implementation and revision of the Group's strategic vision and operating plan in alignment with ILH and MSL needs. Develop and manage internal Group communication and administrative processes, including supervision of administrative committees and content for Group meetings; manage internal communications. Establish and maintain a project management mechanism for Group projects, ensure resource allocation and supervision, and report outcomes to Group leadership and ILH/MSL as required. Represent the Group in external meetings, hospital surveys or inspections, and other forums as directed. Develop and manage the Group staffing plan and direct the Group work schedule to meet Group and ILH/MSL goals and quality initiatives. Apply existing Inova policies and contribute to new policy development as needed.
Group member management and development
Develop and manage training for new members and ongoing development; liaise with APP and other leadership. Recruit physicians and APPs, oversee applicant screening, interviews, and hiring; supervise credentialing processes. Supervise performance, including performance improvement and disciplinary processes; conduct regular meetings with Group members in collaboration with Quality, Human Resources, and Leadership. Develop and manage performance improvement plans and provide mentorship. Complete annual performance reviews and maintain personnel files with Human Resources. Be available on-call as required to support Group function.
Financial management and analyses
Contribute to Group revenue cycle and budget management. Assist department administration with payroll management as needed. Participate in financial or project analyses as required for program evaluation.
Other responsibilities
Assist Quality with patient complaint resolution as needed. Participate in physician training events and annual self-evaluation. Partner with the Inova Foundation to engage patients in support of Inova priorities. Engage in other functions as directed by ILH or MSL leadership.
Performance measures
Medical Director performance is evaluated annually using measures including, but not limited to: Progress on Group operating plan goals and project status. Ability to advance projects and improve core quality measures. Development of professional relationships within the Group and with departments and leadership inside and outside the MSL. Effectiveness in managing the Group's administrative structure and staffing/scheduling with adherence to metrics. Accuracy and timeliness of documentation related to Group member management and development.
Medical Director – Additional/Preferred Qualifications
Additional requirements: MD or DO, Board Certified to practice Internal Medicine in Virginia. Eligible to be employed by Inova full-time and credentialed in good standing. Minimum five (5) years of Hospitalist experience with an active clinical role in the most recent two years, including at least one year of direct clinical teaching with residents and/or medical students. Minimum two (2) consecutive years of administrative/leadership experience in a hospital or healthcare setting. Knowledge of hospital quality improvement processes; knowledge of organizational management concepts and project management is a plus. Aligns with Inova's mission, vision, values and strategic direction.
Preferred qualifications
Seven (7) years of Hospitalist experience with active clinical role in the most recent two years and two (2) years of clinical teaching experience. Four (4) consecutive years of administrative/leadership experience.
