The City of Richmond, Department of Public Utilities is seeking a qualified Commercial Meter Technician. The Commercial Meter Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, inspecting, calibrating, and repairing commercial and industrial natural gas metering systems. This role ensures accurate measurement and safe operation of gas meters while complying with regulatory standards and company policies.

This position is considered Essential Personnel, which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions and inclement weather.

Duties include but are not limited to

Performs the setting, removal and repair of gas and water meters. Performs the installation and maintenance of gas pressure and reducing regulator. Performs the installation and maintenance of the computerized gas correctors and programs. Performs testing of commercial gas and water meter for accuracy. Investigates various gas and water problems while meeting with the public. Performs designing and construction of meter sets, manifolds and other related gas piping and meters. Performs gas and water testing; calibrates accurately if needed. Performs sizing of water meters according to gallons per minute.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

High school diploma or equivalent 2+ years in gas metering, field operations, or a related utility field An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

LICENCES, CERTIFICATIONS and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Virginia Driver's License Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to possess DOT Operator Qualifications (OQs) or obtain within 90 days of hire See area of focus for further certifications required/preferred

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior commercial/industrial work experience experience Technical certification in metering, instrumentation, or gas utility operations

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge (some Combination Of The Following)

Gas pressure regulators, flow computers, and meter proving systems Meter changeouts Relevant safety procedures and practices Leak detection for gas/water meters

Skills(some Combination Of The Following)

Operating hand/power tools and diagnostic equipment Communication and customer service skills Installing, testing, troubleshooting, and upgrading various gas/water meters Documenting results of testing

Abilities (some Combination Of The Following)

Read blueprints Adhere to safety policies, PPE requirements, and regulations Collaborate with other internal/external customers Operate city vehicle

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

HYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push objects, pull objects, lift, use fingers and grasp objects. The working conditions may include exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases and potentially hazardous chemicals, hazardous physical conditions and extreme temperatures. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
