Senior Mainframe Developer (COBOL) Chicago, IL. Onsite, Full-time. Senior level (8+ years preferred). We are seeking an experienced Senior Mainframe Developer with strong expertise in COBOL programming to design, develop, test, and maintain mission-critical applications. The ideal candidate will have deep experience with mainframe technologies, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in complex business and technical environments. Responsibilities
Design, develop, enhance, and maintain mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, VSAM, and DB2. Perform detailed analysis of business requirements and translate them into technical specifications. Optimize and troubleshoot existing COBOL programs for performance and scalability. Collaborate with business analysts, testers, and other IT teams to deliver high-quality solutions. Support production systems, identify issues, and implement effective fixes. Conduct code reviews and mentor junior developers on mainframe best practices. Participate in Agile/Waterfall development methodologies as required. Ensure compliance with security, data integrity, and regulatory standards. Required Skills & Experience
8+ years of experience in mainframe development with COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM, CICS. Strong debugging and problem-solving skills in a mainframe environment. Experience with end-to-end SDLC (design, coding, testing, deployment, and support). Knowledge of batch and online processing. Hands-on experience in performance tuning and optimization of COBOL programs. Familiarity with file systems, utilities, and scheduling tools (e.g., CA-7, Control-M). Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications
Experience in the financial, insurance, or banking domain. Exposure to Agile/Scrum methodologies. Knowledge of modernization strategies such as Mainframe to Cloud migration. Education
Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
