U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs This position requires a highly skilled Sonographer with a comprehensive, specialized education in the medical and technical aspects of diagnostic cardiac sonography. This position is located with the Specialty Service line working under the Chief of Medicine, Cardiologist and Cardiopulmonary coordinator at the Martinsburg, WV, VAMC. Duties

Independently perform diagnostic tests, provide patient education, and act as a liaison and information source for the patient and family, nursing staff and medical staff. Responsible for the delivery of professional services and the provision of high-quality patient care in the Echo Lab. Review performance for quality and accuracy. Perform cardiac ultrasound (echocardiograms) autonomously to acquire the maximum diagnostic image quality, including M-mode, two-dimensional and Doppler examinations. Perform portable ultrasound procedures on patients who cannot be transported to the department. Maintain logs and controls. Operate high-technology ultrasound equipment to produce diagnostic images. Receive patients and explain the procedure; position the patient in various positions as required. Operate the transducer to the thorax or body part under examination using real-time imaging techniques. Understand basic computer operations to select programs, prepare equipment, and change imaging modalities as needed. Assess and interpret cardiac structures and blood flow during Doppler studies. Record and document imaging findings; train other staff including physicians and medical students as related to ultrasound. Perform basic maintenance of ultrasound equipment and maintain adequate stock of equipment. Consult with cardiologist and/or physician regarding interpretation of echo testing results; schedule and prioritize echocardiogram studies; screen consults for urgency. Maintain patient logs and labeling of completed exams; provide a preliminary report prior to physician review; file reports and maintain copies within the Cardiopulmonary Department. Keep abreast of new developments in the field and suggest improvements to operations. Other tasks/duties as assigned. Work Schedule

Full time. Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm. Compensation and Benefits

You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Must be proficient in written and spoken English. Subject to background/security investigation; may require a probationary period and pre-employment requirements including I-9 verification; pre-employment physical examination may be required. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all VA Health Care Personnel. Qualifications

Education: No specific educational requirements; education may be substituted for experience at GS-4 and GS-5 levels. Licensure or Certification is not required but is desirable at GS-6 or above (BCLS/ACLS desirable). ARDMS and CCI certification with 1-3 years of cardiac sonography experience is preferred. Grade Determinations

GS-8 Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography) Full Performance Level. Certification not required but highly desirable; experience at least one year at GS-7 level with demonstrated ability to conduct diagnostic echocardiography in complex cases.
