System Administrator

at University of California, Riverside. The Systems Administrator is part of the Information Technology Solutions organization that supports UCR School of Medicine (SOM) and UCR Health. This role is responsible for the stability, security, and efficiency of a hybrid IT infrastructure encompassing on-premises data centers and cloud environments. This role helps to ensure stability in the technical environment to help support the operations for UCR School of Medicine and UCR Health clinic locations. This individual will act as a subject matter expert, handling daily operations, maintenance, and complex troubleshooting across server OS (Windows/Linux), virtualization (VMware/Hyper-V), hardware, storage, and applications. The Systems Administrator will be responsible for helping with modernizing infrastructure, planning technology evolution, and driving cloud adoption (AWS/Azure/GCP). The role requires strong technical proficiency, analytical and strategic thinking, and preferably, healthcare industry knowledge to navigate regulatory requirements like HIPAA. This position is for an experienced IT professional who is both a technical operator and a strategic contributor, vital to the organization's technological success and innovation. The incumbent will be key in helping drive the schools mission in improving access to health services in our local communities. This position is hybrid with 3 days on-site and 2 days remote. The full salary range for the System Administrator is

$96,628.26 - $146,114.48

annually. However, the pay scale for this position is up to

$111,900

annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, UCR is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff. As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements. Responsibilities Handle daily operations, maintenance, and complex troubleshooting across server OS (Windows/Linux), virtualization (VMware/Hyper-V), hardware, storage, and applications. Modernize infrastructure, plan technology evolution, and drive cloud adoption (AWS/Azure/GCP). Ensure stability, security, and efficiency of a hybrid IT environment to support UCR SOM and UCR Health clinic locations.

Qualifications

Educational Requirements:

Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Experience Requirements:

Minimum of 4 to 7 years of related experience; hands-on experience with Windows AD directory, Group Policies, PowerShell, Windows Server environments, and Office 365 components. Demonstrated experience administering both Linux and Windows servers; hands-on experience with Linux shell and PowerShell. Hands-on experience with server backup tools (cloud tools as well) and experience managing complex patching deployments of various systems. Experience with protocols: HTTP, FTP, DNS, LDAP, IMAP, SMTP, SSL, SSH, CIFS, NFS. Experience installing, managing, and supporting IIS, Tomcat, or other application servers. Demonstrated experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration. Demonstrated experience running cloud-based workloads on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated skills in adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs; understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, users, and related functions. Knowledge of virtualization and containerization technologies such as Docker, Proxmox or Kubernetes to manage virtualized workloads. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information clearly; ability to write technical documentation. Knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team; demonstrates problem-solving skills and ability to meet deadlines. Ability to manage server and infrastructure hardware in an enterprise-class data center environment. General knowledge of other IT areas; thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions to improve or correct performance. Basic knowledge of installation and maintenance of database platforms: MySQL, MSSQL.
