Overview

This position provides deep support for the analysis, design, development, and delivery of ship to shore communications and data transport to achieve and sustain world class Shipboard Communications and services for the Carnival Corporation fleet. This role is part of the team responsible for the development of ship to shore communication transport services for the fleet, including Satellite services, WiMax, WiFi, LTE or other defined technologies to achieve optimal results. The Principal Operation Engineer is responsible for the design, validation and integration of effective and reliable ship-to-shore satellite and wireless communication systems and for the collection and summarization of network statistics for the assigned Carnival Corporation brands and vessels. The incumbent will support Satellite Communication Analysts on data collection and act as a technical advisor for evaluating enhancements to achieve an optimal level of service across the global satellite, telecommunications, and wireless WAN network. You may also be expected to support IT team members in resolving network performance issues that require in-depth analysis of traffic statistics and equipment configuration parameters. You should be well grounded in the technical aspects of satellite and telecommunications networks, including an understanding of satellite RF and IP networks, and remain informed on industry trends. Essential Functions

Engineer responsible for Shipboard telecommunications and satellite systems

– Be the resident expert in baseband and terminal technologies. Implement, configure, troubleshoot, and optimize satellite and terrestrial baseband networks. Continuous Improvement of satellite and telecommunications systems

– Analyze network performance data and develop plans to address trends that affect service; develop and provide reporting on a regular basis to brand and corporate management. Operations monitoring, availability & performance

– Ensure that performance and availability metrics are met or exceeded to support world class services to Guests and Crew; monitor and implement enhancements with stakeholders; lead the identification of needed terrestrial circuits for acquisition; optimize and monitor existing and future circuits. Network Optimization

– Optimizing networks, routers, firewalls, and WAN optimization. Incident management

– Include problem escalation for processes with critical event communication, RCA; establish operation monitoring processes and incident management including alerting, triage, escalation, and communication for all shipboard communications; develop testing and QA protocols for deployment and troubleshooting of satellite services incidents and documentation (BOM, design documentation, user manuals). Bandwidth pooling, process coordination and brand collaboration

– Design, implement and maintain a satellite bandwidth pooling methodology to optimize Fleet bandwidth; create reports capturing effectiveness of bandwidth pooling. Alternate bandwidth sourcing

– Coordinate with project management to design multi-mode, least cost routing (MMLCR); input on design and build-out of new terrestrial and satellite networks supporting Internet and enterprise connectivity. Vendor Solutions Delivery

– Work with vendors to define requirements and test new products; define, implement, and manage network architectural changes to maximize service delivery. Documentation and specifications

– Define and/or develop infrastructure design and procedures for global VSAT & Terrestrial networks; assist GIS Operations and service partners during pilots and production; collaborate with Product Management to define product specifications; work with Global IT Infrastructure on system design and cost estimates. Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering. Technical and managerial certifications are desirable. 10+ years of experience implementing complex satellite, telecommunications, and/or VSAT infrastructure. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of satellite communications (theoretical and practical). Detailed knowledge of iDirect, Hughes, and/or Viasat Satellite Baseband Infrastructure. Satellite antennas (C-Band and KU), satellite bandwidth pooling, QoS. Excellent presentation and communication skills. Experience implementing satellite communications systems. Hands-on experience with telecommunications networks (IP, routing, queuing, delay/packet loss); strong RF knowledge with link budgets. Hands-on experience evaluating satellite baseband hardware, software, and terminals for voice and data. Experience with internet optimization products/appliances (caching, pre-fetch, compression, etc.). Experience configuring, testing, and optimizing satellite terminals in maritime/mobility applications. Strong system-level troubleshooting and problem resolution skills. Experience with network equipment testing and documentation of hardware/software. Knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, multicast, and QoS on IP-based networks; experience with Layer 2/3 devices. Working knowledge of Satellite RF sub-systems (BUCs, LNBs, antennas). Ability to capture and analyze IP packets using tools (e.g., Ethereal/Tcpdump). Experience supporting installations, upgrades, and system integration. Ability to interpret electrical and mechanical drawings, cables lists and related documents. Proficiency with electrical and communications wiring and IT hardware setup. Experience using mapping software to create coverage maps. Proven experience implementing complex satellite and terrestrial communication services. Experience in Operational Support and/or Service Delivery. Advanced technical expertise in computer and network services for local and wide area networks. Ability to collaborate across geographically diverse teams. Work is primarily sedentary with sitting most of the time; walking and standing occasionally. Visual acuity required for data preparation and analysis, reading documents, reports, and emails. Travel

20% Work Conditions

Position will be located at Carnival Corporation’s headquarters in Miami, Florida. Work beyond normal business hours may be required occasionally. This position is classified as “in-office.” It requires working from a Carnival office in South Florida Tuesday through Thursday each week. Employees may work from home on Mondays and Fridays. Candidates must be located in (or willing to relocate to) the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area.
