Posting Expires: 9/29/25 Salary Range: $42,582.85- $53,288.56 General Description and Classification Standards The Solid Waste Operator II is responsible for operating various pieces of equipment, including garbage trucks, vehicles, and other specialized apparatus, as part of the Public Works Department's operations. Specifically, they are required to have a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License with a Class A or B endorsement, depending on the specific equipment being operated. This position entails a range of responsibilities, including operating trucks and equipment, performing repairs, and preparing necessary documentation. This is an experienced role that requires an individual with a high level of skill and technical proficiency, capable of carrying out complex assignments with minimal supervision. As a promotional position, it is attainable by qualified employees within the work group who demonstrate the necessary knowledge, abilities, and performance. This position may be the sole representative of this specialty within the work group, or it may be part of a broader team or public-facing role. Supervision Received Team members will be working under direct supervision and following standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks. In some instances, employees may need to work independently or collaborate with other team members to complete specialized tasks and contribute to the overall completion of assigned projects. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Operates a variety of vehicles, including dual-drive garbage trucks, conventional rear loader garbage trucks, MAD VACs, mini-garbage trucks, tandem dump trucks, and open body dump trucks, in a safe and effective manner to minimize risks and ensure fleet safety. Performs manual collecting and transporting waste, which may include household garbage, trash, yard trimmings, and various other materials. This involves using tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, and pitchforks to empty receptacles and remove yard waste. Performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure the condition and safety of all departmental vehicles, which include tasks such as checking oil, tire, and fluid levels. Ensures all vehicles and equipment are properly maintained and secured in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures. Maintains accurate records, including scale reports from landfill operators, to document the weight and quantity of waste collected and transported. Also responsible for reviewing and signing various documents, such as work orders, attendance records, and preventive maintenance reports. Effectively communicates and interacts with management, colleagues, and members of the general public to provide excellent customer service and ensure the smooth operation of daily work details. Decision Making Works under general supervision. Depending on the project objectives, team members may work collaboratively with other team members or independently, handling specific tasks or projects with accountability for their assigned responsibilities. Throughout our tasks, we ensure adherence to standardized processes and written guidelines to ensure successful task accomplishment. Leadership Provided Typically, our organization provides minimal training for our permanent staff, assuming they have prior knowledge and experience in our line of work. However, we do offer comprehensive onboarding programs for new hires, temporary, and contract workers. These programs cover essential topics such as safety rules, equipment operation, and standard operating procedures to ensure they can perform their duties effectively and safely. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Operates heavy trucks and specialized solid waste collection equipment, including front-end loaders, rear packers, side-loaders, claw trucks, and roll-off trucks. Conducts daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections; maintains inspection logs and reports mechanical deficiencies to fleet maintenance. Drives assigned routes for the collection of garbage, yard trimmings, bulky items, and recycling; ensures route completion within scheduled timeframes. Loads, unloads, and disposal of collected waste materials at approved transfer stations and disposal facilities. Maintains accurate records of routes, loads, fuel usage, and service requests using departmental reporting systems. Ensures compliance with all Department of Public Works (DPW) regulations, safety standards, and departmental policies. Provides courteous and professional service to City residents, businesses, and contractors; responds to inquiries and complaints in the field. Assists in training, mentoring, and guiding junior operators and laborers as directed. Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and departmental initiatives to improve service delivery. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications – Education & Experience High School Diploma or GED. One (1) year of experience in the operating Rear Loader Garbage Truck, Tandem Dump truck, Mechanical Street Sweeper, Knuckle boom, front-End Loader, Rubber Tire Loader or other equipment that would prepare applicants to operate Public Works equipment utilized by the position. Preferred Education & Experience High School Diploma or GED. Two (2) years of experience in the operation of heavy trucks, preferably in solid waste collection, sanitation, or public works.
