Location: CRLA Headquarters – Modesto, CA (Hybrid) • Full Time

Overview: CRLA is an anti-poverty law firm that dismantles unjust systems through community lawyering in California’s historically rural areas, focusing on housing, employment, health, and public education access. This role supports all functional areas of the Human Resources department, with a focus on HR operations, compliance, onboarding, leave management, employee relations, HRIS management, policy interpretation, and staffing support.

Responsibilities

  • HR Operations: Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws; advise staff on HR policies; identify process improvements; manage routine HR tasks and inquiries; process unemployment claims and verification documents; provide support to the HR Director as needed.
  • Compliance: Prepare and submit required federal and state compliance reports; ensure I-9s are compliant and properly stored; ensure employment posters and wage orders are up to date; conduct HR compliance audits and implement recommendations.
  • Onboarding: Manage onboarding, collect and process new-hire documentation (I-9s, benefits enrollment); conduct new-hire orientation; refine onboarding processes.
  • Leave Management: Manage FMLA, CFRA, PDL, PFL, ADA, and workers’ compensation leaves; notify employees of rights and responsibilities; coordinate with the Director of HR on complex leave issues.
  • Employee Relations: Support the Director of HR in handling employee relations matters; respond to inquiries confidentially and escalate sensitive issues as needed.
  • HRIS Management: Maintain employee records in the HRIS; learn Paycom backend functionality; provide workforce insights through reports to leadership.
  • Policy Development and Interpretation: Assist in updating HR policies and provide guidance to employees on policy interpretation.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Solid knowledge of HR administration principles, practices, and California employment laws.
  • At least three years of progressive HR generalist experience with emphasis on LOA (FMLA, CFRA, PDL, PFL, ADA, Workers’ Comp) and employee/labor relations.
  • Trustworthy self-starter who can work independently on detailed tasks and deliver accurate, timely results.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects with a high level of confidentiality.
  • Strong initiative, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication; commitment to diversity and ethical standards.
  • Experience with HRIS systems and the ability to analyze data for workforce insights.

Preferred

  • Experience in the legal aid or social justice sector.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 tools (SharePoint, Teams) and learning management systems.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.

Compensation & Benefits

Estimated starting annual salary: $69,000 – $86,200, placement based on related experience. Benefits include 100% employer-covered medical, dental, vision, life, and short & long-term disability insurance for employees (up to 50% for dependents), 401(k) with CRLA contribution, and LRAP eligibility where applicable. Generous paid leave policy includes 15 sick days, 15 holidays, and vacation accrual (15 days in the first year; 20 days after one year).
