Mechanical Engineering Manager

Custom Automation Machines Location: Open to relocation | Travel: 5–10% Domestic & International
Salary: 110-150k Department: Mechanical Engineering | Reports To: Director of Operations About the Role: We are seeking a seasoned Mechanical Engineering Manager to lead and inspire a talented team of engineers and designers in the design and delivery of custom automatic assembly machines. Projects typically range from $1M–$5M, with some reaching $25M, offering high-impact and complex engineering challenges. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of a growing engineering team and deliver precision automation solutions for a diverse client base. Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage the Mechanical Engineering team, currently 11–12
engineers/designers,
growing to 20 in the coming years. Provide technical direction and mentorship to ensure project success. Responsibilities include:
Set and maintain departmental goals aligned with company objectives. Assign work, monitor schedules, and ensure project deadlines are met. Provide technical guidance on mechanical designs, precision assemblies, robotics, pick-and-place systems, bowl feeding, cam-driven and asynchronous mechanisms, and other automation components. Drive concept development, risk mitigation, and cost-effective engineering solutions. Mentor and develop team members, aligning engineers to the right projects and holding them accountable for results. Oversee internal and customer design reviews, ensuring deliverables meet specifications and standards. Maintain and implement CAD standards, PLM/PDM processes, and best practices. Evaluate new technologies and vendor products to enhance automation capabilities. Support HR functions including recruiting, interviewing, and annual performance reviews. Ensure adherence to ISO 13485 quality standards and support Quality Management Programs. Collaborate across departments, management, and external vendors to ensure seamless project execution. Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) preferred, or equivalent experience. 10+ years of experience in custom-built machine design, precision assembly, and automation. Proven leadership of engineering teams, including mentoring, task assignment, and performance management. Strong hands-on design experience with precision mechanisms, drives, conveyors, actuators, cams, servos, and robotics. Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, PLM software, EPlan, MS Office Suite, and Salesforce. Strong understanding of mechanical engineering standards, fabrication, assembly, and technical problem-solving. Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate with internal teams, clients, and vendors. Willingness to relocate and travel domestically and internationally as needed.
