Position Overview
Job Title: Circulation Clerk Department: Library Status: Full-Time FLSA: Non-Exempt
POSITION OVERVIEW The Circulation Clerk must be adaptive and open to learning as well as customer service oriented. This person is responsible to perform general library tasks and customer service activities under the supervision of the Library Manager & Library Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES Follows all policy and procedures regarding privacy and confidentiality of patron and employee information. Provides excellent customer service to all patrons who enter the Library, greeting them and offering assistance. Follows opening, midday, and closing procedures. When closing, reports library statistics in Library Stats tracker. Creates and issues library cards and TexShare cards. Manages patron library accounts and makes corrections on notification issues. Circulates materials including check-out, check-in, renewals, holds, and reserves. Handles patron concerns with tactfulness and resolves issues with patron library cards. Collects fines and fees on patron accounts and notify patrons of overdue items and reserves. Restocks library brochures, library card applications, and library cards are stocked at circulation desk. Answers telephone and provide routine information over phone, through email, and in-person. Assists in managing the Library's Google calendar, checking in or reserving study rooms, and computers for patrons. Re-shelves materials properly; prepares materials for circulation; and provides basic repairs to library materials. Understands and uses the Dewey Decimal System to shelve books. Assists patrons with readers' advisory; the use of other library resources; the operation of photocopiers, printers, and with computers. Participates in creating displays, exhibits, and programs; and assists with special programs as requested. Follows cash and credit card handling procedures. Monitors reading rooms and all library areas to ensure compliance with library policies and procedures. Maintains the library's physical appearance and follows cleaning practices. Must be prepared to work any day of the week including weekends and any hours the library is open. Must be comfortable opening and closing library independently as needed. Assists with updating monthly book display lists in SharePoint for each season or holiday. Monthly book displays. Assists in setting up the meeting room for library programs, and helps program organizer prepare items. Responsible for ensuring all images and graphics for the library's website, social media, and information screens ready for each month. Performs other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES
Knowledge of library circulation desk tasks and processes Skilled in Microsoft Office products Skilled in direct and effective communication, both written and verbal Ability to work as a team player and stay positive and calm regardless of circumstances. Ability to work well with adults, teens, & children. Ability to perform simple math. Ability to pay attention to detail and maintain accuracy and flexibility. Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changes. Ability to work cooperatively with others and take leadership as required. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the general public. Ability to assist patrons with a wide variety of operating systems, software, & devices. Ability to learn and/or perform minor troubleshooting of computers. Ability to type accurately and assist patrons with web-based programs and the internet Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees, stakeholders, and the public. EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & LICENSES
High school diploma, or its equivalent. Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a Library setting. Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System preferred Knowledge of library management systems preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING ENVIRONMENT Physical tasks may include lifting, squatting, bending, stooping, walking, and carrying supplies, as needed, to accomplish the tasks of the Library activity on a daily basis. Must be able to reach materials at 90" height shelving or shelving at floor level, lift and carry materials, with the use of proper equipment, and push/pull full book carts. Based upon need, required to work flexible hours. The weekly work schedule will include nights and weekends, with some changes to the regular schedule required to participate in programming and outreach services.
