Position Summary

Performs unskilled manual work for a variety of Public Works infrastructure construction, maintenance and repair projects; occasionally operates nonspecialized equipment in connection with manual tasks. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the appropriate Public Works crew supervisor.

Essential Job Tasks and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. The services of Public Works are vital to the daily operation of the City of Lexington. During manpower shortages or emergencies, all Public Works employees may be assigned tasks beyond the scope of their daily responsibilities.

This position performs unskilled manual work for various Public Works infrastructure, construction, maintenance, and repair projects. Maintenance/ Construction Workers may be assigned to the Public Works Construction Crew, Parks and Cemetery Crew, or the Right-of-Way Maintenance Crew. Specific duties may vary depending on crew assignment. In general, this position;

  • Excavates, grades for, forms, and finishes concrete curbs, curbs and gutter, sidewalks, and other assorted right-of-way infrastructure; installs concrete and brick paver sidewalks; installs or repairs a variety of site amenities, including flagpoles, benches, railings, etc.; assists with city-wide traffic signal and signage repair and maintenance; and assists with the maintenance and repair of a variety of city buildings and facilities, to include basic masonry, carpentry, dry walling and painting services.
  • Excavates, grades for, and installs hot mix/ cold mix asphalt for roadway pavement repairs; assists with the layout and installation of a variety of pavement marking materials; assists with the right-of-way green area mowing, trimming and litter collection services; assists with the maintenance of the City’s Moore’s Creek Dam; and assists with annual leaf collection services.
  • Assists with the mowing, trimming, fertilizing, watering, seeding, spraying, mulching, and litter collection services for city parks and cemeteries; assists with the pruning and trimming of park and cemetery trees; assists with the maintenance of park and cemetery facilities and related infrastructure; and assists with cemetery grave and funeral service preparation, to include possible pallbearer services.
  • Loads and unloads tools, equipment, and assorted materials; may operate assorted tools, small engine equipment, and small and large vehicles/ trucks; assists with traffic control set-up and flagging operations; and runs errands and picks up parts and supplies.
  • Assists with community activity support.
  • Assists with snow and ice removal.
  • Performs assigned tasks as assigned.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to three to five years performing many of the tasks outlined in the Essential Job Tasks and Responsibilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse weather conditions; ability to lift heavy articles; general knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance associated with the tools and equipment typically used by Public Works is preferred; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to diplomatically interface with the public; and the ability to foster effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and officials.

Special Requirements

Must consent to and complete pre-employment national Background Screening, Drug Testing, and Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Driving Record check as a condition of employment. Employees may be called outside regular working hours; therefore, employees must possess a cellular or landline phone.

Working Conditions

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas using the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is needed for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Compensation:

Grade H $14.78--$18.08 per hour dependent on qualifications
