Job Summary The MRI Technician (PRN) performs a variety of technical procedures, manipulating radio frequency signals within a magnetic field for the purpose of demonstrating cross-sectional anatomy and to detect pathology. This person functions using independent judgment, initiative and ingenuity when performing technical procedures.

Responsibilities

Verifies requisition, orders (initial order), patient history, consents, and verifies the correct exam is ordered. If needed verifies with Radiologist.

Good working knowledge of RIS and PACS. Orders, starts, and completes exams. Charges supplies and documents medication. Sends images to PACS and reviews images.

Scans all necessary paperwork prior to review in PACS.

Properly assembles exam images in PACS, requisitions, and previous images before submission to Radiologist for interpretation. Has appropriate information before consulting Radiologist.

Able to adapt techniques to various imaging situations.

Produces diagnostic quality images and does not submit suboptimal images. Requests assistance when needed.

Consistently positions correctly with minimal repeats.

Able to obtain quality images in challenging situations and patients.

Uses correct lifting techniques and obtains assistance when needed to prevent injuries when moving patients from/to bed, wheelchair, and imaging tables.

Takes appropriate precautions to prevent patient falls or injury and ensures that unstable patients are not left alone.

Transporting patients: checks for tubes, catheters, wires, restraints, IVs and other medical devices before moving. Knows hospital bed controls.

Returns patients to rooms with bed rails up, restraints in place, IV pumps plugged in, catheter bags hung, patient covered, and nurse call button within reach.

Utilizes various coils properly and selects appropriate coil for patient exam; explains purpose of the coil to the patient.

Maintains patient safety by monitoring contrast injections and injector to prevent infiltrations and by following contrast dosage guidelines.

Follows hospital patient restraint policy and understands that patients may be restrained during imaging procedures to ensure safety and image quality when necessary.

Verifies DOB, name and exam with patient.

Ensures patients are not left alone during procedures.

Respects and protects the patient’s privacy and dignity during undressing/dressing and keeps them appropriately covered during procedures.

Warms up equipment before use as needed. Moves portable equipment with caution to minimize damage.

Explains MRI procedures to gain patient confidence and cooperation and to reduce fear and claustrophobia.

Keeps patient informed of progress during the procedure and remains at the control station during the scan, keeping the patient under observation.

Wears gloves, mask, eye shield and gowns as appropriate. Disposes of sharps, body fluids, contaminated supplies, and linens according to policies and procedures.

Cleans the equipment after each patient.

When not in the MRI area, ensures the door to the magnet is locked.

Requirements

Experience: Good knowledge of all aspects of MRI procedures and protocols, good patient skills, and good communication

Education

Graduate of a 2-year accredited school of Radiology.

License/Certifications

ARRT in MRI (R) and MRT with State of TX
