Description of Work This is an INTERNAL POSTING open ONLY for current permanent employees of the NC Department of Revenue The major purpose of this position is to determine if an Objection and Request for Departmental Review, Form NC-242, is timely, untimely or invalid. This is a critical and time sensitive process for the Department and making proper judgement on all incoming NC-242's is paramount to following NC General Statute 105-242. The work involves reviewing tax returns, notices of proposed assessment/adjustment and related supporting documents for completeness and accuracy.
This position also answers telephone calls and processes correspondence related to tax law (corporate income and franchise, individual income, privilege, sales and use, and withholding) and account adjustments. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: Determine the timeliness and validity of incoming NC-242's Draft and send letters to taxpayers who filed untimely or invalid NC-242's Complete data exchange report(s) with Payroll Service Provider(s) Participate on ECM projects for tax law changes, DMS system updates, and procedural changes considering and communicating to management and training teams the impact to division tasks for successful business transformation Support telephone calls and correspondence work for five tax schedules (listed above) at the intermediate level of technical knowledge Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. Associate degree in Business Administration, Accounting or related field from an appropriately accredited institution, and one year work experience preferably in an accounting-related environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
