Overview

Social Worker role at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The social worker independently performs duties by providing a high level of professional social work services to clients with a broad range of psychosocial and environmental problems. The social worker routinely conducts home visits and community-based outreach to seriously mentally ill homeless and formerly homeless Veterans. Driving and traveling in the community to conduct home visits is an essential job duty.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize a variety of theories and models, which are selected, integrated and adapted to the given client biopsychosocial situation.
  • Provide care appropriate to adult and geriatric patients served, including obtaining and interpreting information to identify patient needs and provide necessary care.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to evaluate, design, and implement programming that supports biopsychosocial problem resolution within available resources.
  • Relate to Medical Center staff and community agencies; supervision or teaching of other staff or trainees to attest to the competence of the social worker.
  • Adapt to changing demands in priorities and pressures; identify and report problems as they arise.
  • Identify and discuss problems regarding assignment, quality of work, and administrative issues with a supervisor.
  • Request consultations on highly complex psychosocial cases to inform appropriate action.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following basic requirements unless otherwise stated:

  • United States Citizenship: A non-citizen may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens as per VA policy.
  • Education: Master’s degree in social work from a school fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). A doctoral degree may not substitute for the master’s degree.
  • Licensure: Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s level. Licensure requirements may be waived for GS-9 at VA’s discretion; GS-11 and above require licensure.
  • English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Background/Security: Subject to background investigation.
  • Pre-employment: Pre-employment physical examination; on-boarding process; certain identification requirements; influenza vaccination program; and valid driver’s license if operating a government vehicle.

Note: Applicants may be referred and tentatively selected before all requirements are met; final hiring is contingent on meeting all prerequisites.

Preferred Experience: Experience working with homeless, mentally ill, and substance-using populations is preferred.
