The VA Cheyenne Health Care System is hiring for one Emergency Department (ED) Social Worker.

Location: Cheyenne, WY

Salary: $76,219 to $116,593 per year

Work schedule: Full-time

Service: Excepted

Duties

  • The Emergency Department (ED) Social Worker provides continuous independent social work coverage to the 9-bed CVAMC Emergency Department and Veterans Express Clinic.
  • Provides initial evaluation, treatment, and disposition within a social work scope for a broad spectrum of needs related to Veteran’s psychosocial needs, including Social Drivers of Health (SDoH).
  • Assists Veterans presenting to the ED at all hours with economic, legal, housing, and other SDoH factors, crisis management related to Veteran and family coping with chronic health and mental health conditions.
  • Is a key member of the Emergency Department interdisciplinary team and is the subject matter expert (SME) for VA and community resources, programs, and benefits.
  • Provides limited brief case management for the highest utilizers of Emergency Department services to encourage appropriate resource utilization and foster trust in CVAHCS.
  • Communicates regularly with the Care Coordination & Integrated Care Management (CC&ICM) team regarding high-utilizing Veterans.
  • Evaluates psychosocial needs and applies social work interventions with a high degree of autonomy, exercising independent judgement in carrying out social work functions and ethics.
  • Provides counseling pertaining to Veteran care needs, advanced care planning, promoting coping with symptoms and loss of functioning, assisting families with adjusting to Veteran’s health and care needs, and coordinating post-emergency department care provided by VA and community providers.
  • Has experience in medical social work and crisis intervention, knowledge of community resources, and ability to coordinate services and referrals.
  • Maintains documentation in the electronic medical record, establishes positive working relationships with VA staff and external partners, attends interdisciplinary meetings, and participates in performance improvement processes.
  • Collaborates to solicit feedback from patients and supports service enhancements as needed.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of education or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

  • Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited per VA policy.
  • Education: Master’s degree in social work from an accredited school of social work (CSWE). Doctoral degree may not substitute for the master’s degree.
  • Licensure: Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s level. At GS-9, an exception allows non-licensed individuals to become licensed within three years of appointment, with state prerequisites considered.
  • English Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Other: May be required to serve a trial period; subject to background/security investigation; pre-employment requirements apply.
  • Demonstrated KSAs (GS-9): Ability to work with Veterans and families from diverse backgrounds; assess psychosocial functioning and needs; implement treatment modalities; establish relationships with clients and community agencies; knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses and terminology.
  • GS-11 – Experience and Licensure: One year of post-MSW experience at GS-9 level with independent practice licensure/certification; or doctoral degree in social work. Additional KSAs include knowledge of community resources, psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions, medical/mental health knowledge, treatment modalities, and ability to provide consultation to new staff and students.

Education

Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education requires appropriate documentation for credit toward qualifications.
