Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Salary to be commensurate with experience. The hiring range for this position is: $21.51 - $26.89 hourly.
Sign-on bonus: New employees are eligible for a $2,500 bonus, with $500 paid on the first payroll, $1,000 paid after successful completion of the 6-month introductory period, and $1,000 at the one-year anniversary.
This is a continuous posting used to fill multiple vacancies. The City of Aurora conducts ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-served basis; once a qualified pool is determined, the position may close quickly and without notice.
The City of Aurora Aurora Water Utility Worker performs manual labor duties and assists with routine maintenance and repair functions for divisions within the Aurora Water Department. Employees in this position model the Core 4 Values: Customer Service, Professionalism, Integrity, and Respect.

Divisions and Primary Duties
The Aurora Water Operations and Maintenance division is accepting applications for the following divisions. If you would like to see the differences between each division, please view the video provided by the department.
Wastewater
The Wastewater Section performs preventive and emergency maintenance of wastewater mainlines. Tasks are performed daily using Vac-Con combination sewer cleaners, Closed Circuit Television equipment, and other support trucks and equipment. Most work is above ground; entry into manholes is infrequent. All Wastewater employees participate in a standby program requiring on-call status 24-7, two to three weeks per year. Average overtime in this section is 30 hours per year.
Construction & Repair (C&R)
This section repairs and maintains over 1,500 miles of pipeline, including emergency water and service line repairs, fire hydrants, valves, and vault rehabilitation or replacement. Sewer repairs for gravity, force mains, and reuse piping, including manhole maintenance, are duties as well. Water main replacement occurs in the summer; snow removal occurs in winter. Overtime is required; call back duty is a high priority. Average overtime is 250 hours per year.
Stormwater
The Stormwater Section is responsible for a variety of tasks; activities may change daily. Typical duties include tree removal, mowing, weed control chemical applications, inspections, maintenance and repair of stormwater pipes and culverts, concrete repairs, high-traffic work areas, and off-road work along creeks. Snow removal may be required. Average overtime in this section is 30 hours per year.
In addition, all divisions will perform the following primary duties and responsibilities:
- Loads and unloads tools
- Repair and replacement activities
- Perform routine equipment maintenance
- Assist work crews in installation, repair, testing, and maintenance of water lines, sewer lines, stormwater lines, channels and structures, large water meters, valves, fire hydrants, and other equipment
- Perform tasks using hand tools, shovel, jackhammer, and power tools
- May assist with on-call shifts as needed to assist Public Works with snow removal activities
- Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines and equipment that operate on mechanical principles
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications & Working Conditions
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required
Experience:
- 1-year work experience related to manual labor (preferred)
Abilities:
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions
- Ability to operate or receive training on maintenance and construction equipment
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds repetitively
- Ability to work overtime, call back duty, and standby with 45-minute response times
- Ability to identify issues early
Skills:
- Skill in using ground maintenance equipment and hand tools (preferred)
- Attention to detail and thoroughness in task completion
Licenses and/or Certificates:
- State-issued driver's license with a good driving record
- Current Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain a Colorado CDL within 6 months of hire
Physical Demands:
- Heavy physical work; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; frequent lifting over 100 pounds with assistance
- Considerable walking and standing; extensive range of motion required
- Climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling
- Hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for equipment operation
- Vision and hearing essential for gauges, instructions, and warnings
Work Environment:
- Outdoor work in all weather with exposure to noise, dust, odors, and fumes
- Some work may occur in trenches, confined spaces, and high-traffic areas
Equipment Used:
- Operates equipment and vehicles common to utilities maintenance
- Occasionally may use personal equipment in the course of employment
Essential Personnel:
- When a local emergency or disaster is declared, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel
