Part-Time Senior Streets Maintenance Worker

Performs equipment operation and responsible unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work in the Street and Sanitation Division of the Town Public Works Department. An employee in this class operates heavy equipment and trucks, and performs varied maintenance and repair work on streets, storm drains, signs, sidewalks, curbs, parking lots, athletic fields, parks, and Town facilities to include debris removal. Work may involve supervising inmate crews to perform the work assignment and requires a Commercial Driver's license to operate equipment used in performing the work. Work includes assisting with other areas of work in the Public Works Department and assisting with set up, tear down, and trash removal for special Town events. Judgment and initiative are required in the performance of duties. Employee is subject to various environmental conditions including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, and close quarters. Works on-call to assist in after-hours emergency repair work. Work is performed under regular supervision and is reviewed for accuracy, safety, and adherence to established standards. Essential Duties and Tasks: Works independently or on team performing maintenance and repair work on streets, storm drains, signs, sidewalks, curbs, parks lots, parks, and Town facilities. Operates various equipment including backhoes, frontend loaders, street sweeper, knuckle boom, dump truck, and mowers in maintenance and repair work. Assists with breaking up, removing, and constructing concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, etc.; digs up concrete, spreads gravel; helps set concrete forms, pours, brushes, and finishes concrete. Prepares asphalt materials for resurfacing and patching; digs holes with shovel; pours and fills hole with and spreads asphalt; manually grades potholes in streets, ditches, and gravel in driveways; use stripe machine to line streets. Uses asphalt roller, jack hammer, cement mixer, power tools such as chain and concrete saws, tampers, and varied hand tools. Mows, clears, and prepares athletic fields for use by recreational leagues. Cleans storm drains, ditches, and catch basins; mows, trims, and landscapes work area using mowers, weed eater, chain saw, etc.; trims tree limbs. Picks up yard debris from residents; collects leaves; uses leaf vacuum machine. Orders street signs, adds street names, and installs signs. Operates street sweeper through streets and areas with curbs and gutters to sweep clean. Operates construction equipment such as roller, tampers, air compression driven equipment, and other related light and medium equipment. Drives dump truck to haul materials such as gravel, asphalt, sand, dirt, and broken concrete. Mows lawns and cleans debris from parks, parking lots, and other Town facilities. Performs general preventive maintenance on equipment; cleans and washes equipment. Reports any unsafe conditions of equipment and other necessary repairs to supervisor. Assist with set up, tear down, and trash removal for special Town events. Assist other Public Works staff in water and sewer line repairs. Additional Job Duties: Performs related duties as required. Recruitment and Selection Guidelines: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities, and limitations of equipment used. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of heavy equipment. Considerable knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations for equipment operation. Considerable knowledge of the use of common tools and materials used in street, storm drainage, and sidewalk/curb maintenance and repair work. Ability to operate independently and as part of a team. Ability to operate heavy equipment with skill and safety. Ability to exert heavy physical effort. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the general public. Ability to respond courteously to the public. Physical Requirements: Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to operate equipment, to perform semi-skilled and unskilled tasks; to distinguish details as well as for safety issues; to perform mechanical and trade skills; and to determine thoroughness of work completed. Desirable Education and Experience: Graduation from high school and experience in the operation of equipment used and experience in semi-skilled maintenance or construction work which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirement: Possession of appropriate valid North Carolina commercial driver's license.
