Pool Lifeguard I

The City of Coronado is accepting applications for Pool Lifeguard I. The mission of Coronado Recreation and Golf Services is to promote community, health, and safety while building a culture of excellence. Recreation and Golf Services offer a wide variety of programs and services for all ages and throughout the community. Our staff strives to provide excellent customer service while enhancing the health and fitness of all guests who use our facilities. Under general supervision, to ensure the safety of swimmers and enforce regulations; to observe and supervise the activities of patrons in the pool and surrounding area; to protect life, prevent accidents and rescue swimmers in emergency situations; to prepare lesson plans and assist or conduct instructional swimming or water safety classes for children and adults; to assist in the maintenance of facilities and equipment; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. May lead the work of subordinate lifeguards. Lifeguarding Licenses and Certifications are not prerequisites for applying. All applicants must successfully complete a nationally certified training program to obtain a Lifeguard License and the following Certifications (CPR/AED and First Aid) before aquatic work assignments. Training and licensing will be provided after hire. Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years of age. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities qualifies. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be: Experience: One year of lifeguarding or swim team experience is desirable but not required. Education/Training: Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, supplemented by specialized training in lifeguarding, water safety, or a related field. Licenses and Certificates: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate within three (3) months of appointment. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid First Aid certificate within three (3) months of appointment. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Lifeguard Training certificate within three (3) months of appointment. Possession of a valid Waterfront Lifeguard Certification is desirable. Knowledge of: Principles and practices of swimming, lifeguarding and water safety. Methods and techniques of first aid, CPR and AED. Methods and techniques of swimming instruction. Basic operations, services and activities of a public swimming facility including water chemistry and maintenance functions. Principles and practices of public relations. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment. Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations. Ability to: Perform lifeguarding duties including water rescues. Enforce applicable rules and regulations of the City pool. Swim with endurance and proficiency at a level necessary to perform assigned duties. Respond to emergency situations and administer first aid, CPR and AED as necessary. Interpret and explain aquatics program policies and procedures. Analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective course of action. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
