Highway Maintenance Technician

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician in Lusk, Wyoming, to perform various maintenance duties under limited supervision to provide a safe and effective transportation system. This position offers a $2,000 hiring bonus. See notes for eligibility. Lusk is located in Niobrara County, the least populated county in Wyoming. Wyoming also has no state income tax. Human Resource Contact: 307-473-3243 / Madeline Miozzi / madeline.miozzi@wyo.gov Essential functions include maintaining and operating complex equipment safely and proficiently, training incumbents in the operation and maintenance of equipment, providing work direction to Highway Maintenance Assistant employees, flagging traffic and setting up traffic control devices, operating trucks equipped with stripers, augers, aerial lift equipment, or provided with plows, wing plows, sander, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from roadway surfaces, and more. Preferences/agency requirements include the ability to obtain water certifications, a certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT, a Certificate of course completion of Defensive Driving, a First Aid/CPR certification, and a Flagger certification. Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards, specifications, standard plans, policies and procedures, rules, regulations, and traffic control standards, equipment maintenance and repair procedures, hazardous materials response procedures, Federal and State requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment, basic equipment operation for single and tandem axle trucks, loaders, and tractors, Safe Work Procedures, First Aid and CPR, and Material Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in completing tasks, and knowledge of and ability to utilize office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones are also required. Minimum qualifications include education and experience substitution: 2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction), or an Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering) with 0-1 year of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction). Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire. Physical working conditions include frequent use of manual and powered hand tools, daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment, frequent exposure to hazardous materials, ability to independently lift and/or carry 50 pounds, ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods of time, ability to work in adverse environmental conditions, ability to walk long periods of time on even and uneven ground, ability to work around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment, and occasional overnight travel is required.
