Aquatic Lifeguard
This is skilled water safety work involving the prevention of accidents and injuries and responding with effective care and treatment to emergency situations at aquatic pool areas. Works independently with periodic supervision provided by the Facility Supervisor and or Aquatics Manager. Essential Job Duties: Safeguard patrons while maintaining skills at a rescue-ready level and monitoring pools for guest safety. Performs emergency water rescue techniques to assist persons in distress; performs CPR and administers standard first aid when necessary. Ensures general safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures are adhered to as it pertains to aquatic facilities. Assists with aquatics programs and equipment setup for special events. Ensures general upkeep, cleanliness, and appearance of aquatics amenities including pool areas, restrooms, showers, and deck areas. Performs related work as required. Typical Requirements: Knowledge of water rescue methods, CPR, and first aid techniques. Knowledge of park rules and regulations concerning public safety. Ability to handle frightened or injured persons in the water. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations. Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly but tactfully. Ability to remain alert over long periods of time. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, and the general public. Ability to pass a medical skills evaluation. Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest: Swim 150 yards using a combination of front crawl or breaststroke. Then 2 minutes treading water using only the legs, then swim the remaining 50 yards using a combination of front crawl or breaststroke. Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations: American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (with First Aid and CPR/AED) or enrollment in course and attainment before start date.
